Tom Holland is reprising his superhero role in Spider-Man: Brand New Day. According to a movie insider, Holland's Peter Parker will face two antagonists in his fourth Spider-Man film.

Holland is no doubt a fan-favorite in portraying the webslinger on the big screen. After all, he has headlined the most Spider-Man movies when compared to Tobey Maguire and Andrew Garfield. Holland is set to return for his fourth film after leading three successful MCU solo movies — Spider-Man: Homecoming (2017), Spider-Man: Far From Home (2019), and Spider-Man: No Way Home (2021). A movie scooper recently talked about the new Spider-Man film in a podcast and teased about the villains that will likely be featured in the upcoming superhero flick.

Movie insider Jeff Sneider joined John Rocha in the latest episode of The Hot Mic. The former opened up about the latest rumors about Spider-Man, which involve its villains. "The word on the street is Mr. Negative is the villain. That is what's supposed to be going on, and then there's a secondary female villain, you know, there always has to be more than one villain in a Spider-Man movie," Sneider shared. He also added that Succession star Sara Snook is rumored to play the female antagonist. Rocha commented that he heard Steven Yeun is being eyed to play Mr. Negative. Sneider said "that would make sense" because the Beef star was originally in the MCU's Thunderbolts*. Rocha quipped that it was likely the case because Yeun reportedly said he had another Marvel project in the pipeline, so he might be referring to Spider-Man: Brand New Day.

Yeun announced his departure from Thunderbolts* early last year. The Invincible star said his exit from the project was due to a scheduling conflict. Some projects were delayed due to the pandemic and Hollywood strikes, so when it was okay to film, he had tons of things on his plate. He eventually decided to let go of Thunderbolts*, but he said that he was willing to join the MCU down the line. Meanwhile, Stephen Oyoung, who voices Mr. Negative in Marvel's Spider-Man video game, acknowledged the rumor about the villain potentially appearing in Spider-Man: Brand New Day. He teased that he knew "certain things." However, Sony has reportedly not contacted him. He added that he was hopeful fans would see Mr. Negative on the big screen, even if another actor might portray him.

Spider-Man: Brand New Day Having Two Villains Makes Sense When Considering The Franchise's History

Sneider has a point about Spider-Man having at least two villains. In Spider-Man: Homecoming, the main villain was Adrian Toomes/Vulture (Michael Keaton), and the secondary antagonist was Hernan Schultz/Shocker (Bokeem Woodbine). In Spider-Man: Far From Home, Spidey faces Quentin Beck/Mysterio (Jake Gyllenhaal), a former Stark employee. The supporting antagonists are the Elementals. However, they are only holographic projects that Mysterio uses to manipulate the world. In Spider-Man: No Way Home, Spider-Man faces an ensemble of villains, but Norman Osborn/Green Goblin (Willem Dafoe) is the main big bad. The other villains include Otto Octavius/Doctor Octopus (Alfred Molina), Max Dillon/Electro (Jamie Foxx), Flint Marko/Sandman (Thomas Haden Church), and Curt Connors/Lizard (Rhys Ifans).

Yeun playing the big bad in Spider-Man: Brand New Day is interesting. This role is not a complete departure from his supposed character in Thunderbolts*. While Mr. Negative and Sentry are very different, they share some thematic elements, including having dual personalities. Mr. Negative has a split personality — he is a kind philanthropist (Martin Li) and a ruthless crime lord (Mr. Negative). Sentry also suffers from a mental split: the superhero Sentry and his alter ego, the Void. Both characters represent the light vs. Dark theme within them. They also possess manipulation powers. Mr. Negative has his "Negative Touch" that alters other personalities, and he uses them to corrupt and weaken his adversaries to his advantage. On the other hand, the Void can manipulate reality, fear, and people's minds. If Yeun is cast as Mr. Negative, it's probably the closest thing to his version of Sentry.
