Jagex has officially announced Runescape: Dragonwilds as the developer's newest project, bringing many iconic elements of the beloved MMORPG into an open-world survival setting. The massively popular RPG from Jagex set in the world of Gielinor has grown into one of the most iconic and recognizable games in the online space, far from its humble roots as an MMORPG designed to be playable on browsers. The game's longstanding popularity has seen it earn over $1 billion in revenues, with Jagex even bringing its world into spinoff web games, novels, and more. Now, the iconic MMORPG is getting a fully-fledged spinoff.
While RuneScape has been Jagex's main property since the studio's inception, the MMORPG has seen a variety of distinct versions. RuneScape's history can be divided into three different eras, with the game's release in 2001 as RuneScape Classic, the version launching in 2004 known as RuneScape 2, and the modern version of the game referred to as RuneScape 3. RuneScape: Dragonwilds is a New Open-World Survival Game from Jagex
As reported by IGN, Jagex officially revealed RuneScape: Dragonwilds on Monday as a brand-new open-world survival game set within the world of RuneScape The game takes place on a new continent within the game's world of Gielinor, allowing players to team up with others to venture into its world, hone their skills, and battle a wide range of enemies. RuneScape: Dragonwilds will reportedly feature a variety of different skills for players to master, with many skills taken from the original RuneScape. Jagex also confirmed an early access release window for the game, set to arrive in Spring 2025 with a deep-dive to come on April 15.
The initial reveal for RuneScape: Dragonwilds promised plenty of familiar gameplay elements and even settings to longtime fans of RuneScape. The game's "World Teaser Trailer" showed off a variety of different RuneScape locations players can visit, including a tower similar to the Wizard's Tower and a windmill much like the one found in Lumbridge. Dragonwilds also looks to carry over RuneScape's "Runes" with a variety of new uses, ranging from combat applications to open-world exploration.
RuneScape: Dragonwilds looks to be taking a giant step in a bold new direction for Jagex as the developer has continued to improve its existing games. The developer recently revealed a content roadmap for RuneScape 3 through the start of 2026, including the addition of a new area to the game in Havenhythe.
