Once players have the materials and blueprints to graduate from rocks and bows, the medium-range power and general utility of Pistols make them the natural early-game choice in Rust. There are several kinds of ammunition to choose from when outfitting a Pistol, however, and knowing which to use and how to craft them is essential. Pistol Bullet

From Revolvers and M92s to MP5s and Custom SMGs, the Pistol category is a broad one, and the Pistol Bullet is the standard ammunition of that category. Pistols aren't great at punching through the best armor but do fine otherwise, and SMGs can be devastating in close-range raid fights.

Like other immersive crafting games, Rust includes numerous crafting recipes for players to learn. To craft Pistol Bullets, the player will need a Tier 1 Workbench. If the player intends to craft their own Gun Powder and Explosives, they will also need a Mixing Table. Pistol Bullets are simple and effective, making them a great choice when the player is still finding their footing.

High Velocity Pistol Bullet

Costing 4x the Gun Powder that ordinary Pistol Bullets do, High Velocity Pistol Bullets aren't very friendly to players trying to make a fast start after wipe. True to their name, these rounds move significantly faster than conventional bullets, helping compensate for bullet drop and thereby making the player more accurate at longer distances.

Having better accuracy at long range is always nice, but these rounds often aren't worth the expense when raiding enemy bases, since the player could instead spend their valuable time and materials working on rifle ammo instead, thereby getting even more value from the enhanced distance. Crafting HV Pistol Bullets requires a Tier 2 Workbench.

Incendiary Pistol Bullet

The Incendiary Pistol Bullet has a small chance of starting a fire when it makes contact with its target. The higher crafting cost makes these bullets less practical for conventional firefights, but Incendiary Pistol Bullets can still be useful for certain specialized tasks. A Tier 2 Workbench is needed to craft Incendiary Pistol Bullets.

Veteran fans of this lengthy survival game know better than to live in wooden bases, upgrading from twig to stone as fast as possible, but new players or those starved for resources sometimes make the mistake of taking refuge in such a structure. Incendiary Pistol Bullets make quick work of wooden walls and other wooden structures, ensuring this ammo type still has a role to play in some raids.

Nailgun Nails

Nails aren't exactly the first thing that players think of when they think of Pistols, but the Nailgun is a member of the Pistol category in Rust. Unlike other Pistol ammunition, Nails can be retrieved after shooting them, making them the most cost-effective ammunition type, assuming the player survives long enough for such savings to matter. Unlike other weapons in the Pistol category, the Nailgun is a default crafting recipe, but this weapon doesn't see much use due to its low range and damage.
