Summary

  • Ryu Ga Gotoku Studio's next game will be revealed at Tokyo Game Show 2024.
  • TGS 2024 kicks off on September 26.
  • RGG Studio recently said fans will be "surprised" by its next game, implying the project won't be another mainline entry in the Like a Dragon franchise.

Ryu Ga Gotoku Studio will reveal its next game in September 2024, the Sega subsidiary has confirmed. The Like a Dragon developer believes its upcoming title will come as a surprise to some fans.

While best known for its Like a Dragon franchise, formerly known as Yakuza, RGG Studio occasionally tackles other projects as well. Its most recent release is an example of that practice, having arrived in the form of the critically acclaimed Super Monkey Ball Banana Rumble, a Nintendo Switch exclusive that debuted in June 2024.

Like a Dragon Developer's Next Game Will Be Announced at TGS 2024

The Tokyo-based company will be announcing its next game in September 2024, having said as much in a mid-July livestream (via VGC). Specifically, its upcoming project will be unveiled as part of this year's Tokyo Game Show, which RGG Studio has now confirmed to be attending. The 2024 edition of Tokyo Game Show is scheduled to run from September 26 through September 29. The developer's announcement will hence presumably take place on the 26th, or possibly even a day early, as it's not uncommon for TGS exhibitors to detail their trade show lineups a day ahead of the event itself.

RGG Studio Says Its Next Game Will Surprise Fans

While RGG Studio is still keeping its cards close to the chest, the developer did share one notable tidbit about the mysterious project earlier this month. It did so as part of the Anime Expo "Essence of Fandom" event in early July, which saw the Like a Dragon developer proclaim that fans will be "surprised" by its next game, albeit without elaborating on the matter.

Based on that teaser, it would appear that the upcoming title is unlikely to be another mainline entry in the Like a Dragon franchise. With the series currently enjoying unprecedented popularity, as underlined by the fact that Infinite Wealth just became its fastest installment to reach one million sales back in February, another mainline game would be the least surprising announcement that RGG Studio could possibly share.

That's not to say that the TGS 2024 reveal will be unrelated to the hit franchise, especially since RGG Studio and Sega are presumably looking to maintain the series' current momentum right now. But given the aforementioned promise of a surprising announcement, it's safe to say that the best Like a Dragon fans can hope for is another spin-off. The Judgment subseries is a potential candidate for such a release, as its latest entry, Lost Judgment, is currently on the brink of its three-year release anniversary. Of course, the most surprising thing RGG Studio could possibly announce at TGS 2024 would be literally anything unrelated to the Like a Dragon franchise.
