Saber Interactive and Paramount Game Studios announced a new AAA RPG set within the Avatar: The Last Airbender universe, teasing it will be the biggest game yet in the franchise. Even though the beloved Avatar: The Last Airbender series came to a close in 2008, the franchise has retained its popularity over the years thanks to the sequel animated series The Legend of Korra, various video game releases, a Fortnite collaboration, as well as a recent live-action adaptation from Netflix.

Still, many fans have felt that the series has not reached its potential in terms of video games, with many released entries falling short of fans' lofty expectations originally established by the animated series from original show creators Michael DiMartino and Bryan Konietzko. However, the future of the franchise appears bright, not only because of the content being created by Avatar Studios from DiMartino and Konietzko, but with a number of games on the horizon, including a dedicated competitive multiplayer Avatar fighting game which was announced earlier this year. Now, Saber Interactive has thrown its hat in the ring with a new AAA Avatar RPG announcement.

In a new announcement, Saber Interactive and Paramount Game Studios revealed a new action-RPG set within the Avatar: Legends universe. Also, in collaboration with DiMartino and Konietzko's Avatar Studios, this new Avatar game aims to tell a new story with a never-before seen Avatar that takes place thousands of years in the past. While development on the game is still in the early stages, details remain slim, though Saber is aiming to release the game on both PC and consoles sometime in the future.

Avatar Action-RPG Aims to Expand the Franchise

Even without many of the details, Saber is aiming to keep many of the core franchise pillars, such as an immersive and vibrant world, mastering the four elements, as well as dynamic combat alongside companion characters that the Avatar franchise has been known for. Paramount senior vice president of games and emerging media Doug Rosen acknowledged fan desires for more stories set within the Avatar world and through games like this one, they'll be able to expand the world-building and allow fans to experience new content in a more immersive way. Saber Interactive head of intellectual property development and licensing Josh Austin also admitted it's an honor to not only work with Paramount and Avatar Studios, but to be able to "further expand the Avatar Legends universe in video games."

All told, 2024 has been a great year for Saber Interactive so far, after launching games like Expeditions: A MudRunner Game, and of course, one of the biggest hits of the year in Warhammer 40,000 Space Marine 2. Earlier this year, Saber was also sold by Enbracer to Beacon Interactive, a company owned by one of its co-founders, Matthew Karch. However, more significantly, the sale also allowed Saber to retain many of its subsidiary companies and IPs in a move that both sides called a "win-win."
