Sakuna: Of Rice and Ruin anime adaptation is officially getting a sequel. The animation is based on the Sakuna: Of Rice and Ruin game developed by Edelweiss.

The game launched in the US in November 2020 for Nintendo Switch, PlayStation 4 and PC (Steam), but, despite surprisingly good sales, the anime only aired this year. Back in 2021-2022, a manga adaptation was serialized on the Comiplex website, compiled into two volumes.

The anime sequel was announced alongside a spin-off game, and not much information was revealed about the animation, not even its format (a new TV season, a movie, an OVA or any other format). The premiere date also remains to be announced. A PV was shared, but only for the new game:

The anime story starts when harvest goddess Sakuna is banished from her celestial for being too spoiled. Now, she lives on Hinoe, a wild island filled with demons. In this whole new environment, she needs to reclaim her honor as the daughter of a harvest goddess and a warrior god. To achieve that, she will have to fight monsters and cultivate rice, which are things she is supposed to master as a goddess herself (that's why the subtitle is "of rice and ruins"). Luckily, she's not alone: her guardian Tama is beside her, and so are the few people she is able to gather, to help her in this mission.

Sakuna Anime Sequel Possible Staff

Changes are not expected but could happen

It was not confirmed that the series would return to studio PA Works, or if the main staff would be back. However, it's common for the production teams to try to keep the same staff in sequels, because big changes in staff make fans wary (except if the show was considered mild or even bad).

So there's a good chance Masayuki Yoshihara will direct the next animation, with a likely series composition by Jukki Hanada (Sengoku Youko), but since most staff member work as freelancers, it is possible minor changes will happen, depending on the animators' availability. For example, Yasuo Fujii and Yuriko Abe worked on several episodes as animation directors or storyboarders, so in case Hanada or Yoshihara are not able or don't want to come back, one or both of them could be invited to assume their roles.

It is highly unlikely the cast will change, especially because Japanese voice actors reprized their roles from the game. Despite the game being available with Japanese and English audio, the anime has not been dubbed into English yet. But keeping the cast tends to be a priority, since big changes without clear explanations makes fans angry.

Sakuna: Of Rice and Ruin is available to stream on Crunchyroll.
