This year has featured major announcements, with Saros being one of the most intriguing yet. The sci-fi roguelike comes from Housemarque, the developer of Returnal. Based on early footage of Saros, this next project from Housemarque promises another mysterious story that is unraveled through the developer's unique approach to roguelike gameplay.
The game was announced at the most recent State of Play that Sony hosted back in February. An intriguing cinematic trailer raises more questions than presents answers, and that's one of the many aspects that make Saros so compelling. Returnal used its gameplay as a wonderful storytelling tool, and Saros seems bound to do the same. There is another way the two games could be similar, though. Returnal was released for the PS5 early in the console's life cycle, and Saros could be paving the way for the PS6.
Rumor: Next Batman Game Could Be Coming to PS6
A new rumor suggests Rocksteady Studios' next Batman game could be getting a PlayStation 6 version, despite the PS6 not being officially announced.
Saros Has the Potential to Be a Launch Title for the Rumored PS6
Rumors About the PS6 Persist
It's easy to forget that the PS5 is already nearly five years old now. With the COVID pandemic causing shortages, it took a while before the Sony console could fully take off. Now that PS6 rumors and leaks have continued to pop up, the days of the PS5 could slowly be coming to an end. One of the most recent rumors claims that the PS6 could be ready as soon as 2027. Of course, claims as bold as these should be taken with a heavy grain of salt. But, if true, it could set the stage for Saros to be an exciting launch title for the next Sony generation.
Saros Has Yet to Announce a Release Date
- As of now, Saros is expected to arrive sometime in 2026.
Saros may not be launching in 2027, but it's currently one of the biggest Sony exclusives slated for next year. If the roguelike adventure proves to be a hit, it would only make sense for Saros to be considered as a launch title for the PS6. Juggernauts like GTA 6 are a given, but Saros being exclusive makes it a great option to help market the console further. The game's official description on the PlayStation website states, "After each death you'll face a changed world - but you can permanently upgrade and customize your loadout, enabling Arjun to come back stronger every time."
Returnal was part of the first wave of games that helped showcase what the PS5 is capable of, and it's easy to imagine Saros following suit. The game's reveal trailer showcased beautiful graphics that blended unique world design with realism, and the mysterious world of Saros would theoretically look even better on a console that's presumably stronger than the PS5.
The word "saros" is an astronomy term to describe a period of 18 years that can predict solar and lunar eclipses.
After each death you'll face a changed world - but you can permanently upgrade and customize your loadout, enabling Arjun to come back stronger every time.
Everything Confirmed About Saros, So Far
- Roguelike gameplay
- Follows protagonist Arjun, a "Soltari Enforcer"
- Arjun is played by Rahul Kohli (Midnight Mass, The Haunting of Bly Manor)
- The game takes place on a mysterious space colony named Carcosa
- A strange eclipse is at the center of the story
It may be a while before more is revealed about Saros, but so far, it holds a lot of promise. Returnal nailed its gameplay elements, and it will be exciting to see how Saros plans to one-up its predecessor.
As the year continues, only time will tell if Sony reveals more about what Saros has in store. The PS5 is in the latter half of its lifespan, so it will be intriguing to see exactly when Sony decides to unveil its next console. This remains to be seen, but Saros could be destined to help introduce a new system to gamers.
