When you are new to Satisfactory, a few Biomass Burners are enough to keep your machinery up and running. But as you start upgrading The HUB and building the Space Elevator, the power demands will suddenly rise, as new machinery requires lots of watts just to run. While you could use multiple Biomass Burners to power one machine, it is certainly not the best approach.

Luckily, Biomass Burners are just one of the five power generators available in Satisfactory. The next power generator you will unlock is the Coal Generator, but before building it, you will need to construct a Water Extractor to acquire the water needed to run the generator. The Water Extractor is a simple fluid extractor capable of drawing water from deep water sources. In Satisfactory, you will need water to run powerful electricity generators. In this guide, you will learn all about the Water Extractor, including how to unlock it, the materials required to build it, and how to use it.

How to Unlock the Water Extractor in Satisfactory

Satisfactory - Water Extractor in Tier 3

To unlock the Water Extractor, you must unlock Tier 3 at The HUB by completing the first phase of deliveries at the Space Elevator. If you haven’t unlocked the Space Elevator yet, you will need to complete all upgrades in Tier 0 to finish the onboarding process, which will then unlock the Space Elevator.

Satisfactory - Space Elevator

Once unlocked, you will need 500 Concrete, 250 Iron Plates, 400 Iron Rods, and 1500 Wires to build the Space Elevator. After building the Space Elevator, the next step is to craft 50 Smart Plating and deliver them via the Space Elevator to unlock Tier 3 and Tier 4 at The HUB. Finally, complete the Coal Power milestone in Tier 3 to unlock the Water Extractor alongside other buildings like the Coal Generator and Pipelines. You will need 150 Reinforced Iron Plates, 50 Rotors, and 500 Cables to complete the Coal Power milestone.

How to Build the Water Extractor in Satisfactory

Satisfactory - Building a Water Extractor

Unlocking the Water Extractor takes a lot of effort, and you will probably be excited to use it as soon as possible. To build a Water Extractor, you will need to craft the following items:

  • 20 Copper Sheets – Crafted using Copper Ingots
  • 10 Reinforced Iron Plates – Crafted using Iron Plates and Screws
  • 10 Rotors – Crafted using Iron Rods and Screws
Satisfactory - Deep Water source

After gathering all the required materials, look for a deep body of water. As the name suggests, the Water Extractor can only be built on water bodies. Once you find a deep enough water area, press Q to go into Build Mode, and select the Water Extractor from the Fluid Extractors section in the Production tab. When placing the structure, ensure the output is facing the direction where you want the water pipelines to go, such as toward a Coal Generator.

How to Use the Water Extractor in Satisfactory

Satisfactory - Water Extractor connected to Coal Generator

Once you have built the Water Extractor, you’ll need a power source to run it. If this is your first time building a Water Extractor, you will only have access to Biomass Burners. Build a Biomass Burner near the Water Extractor and connect it using a power line.

As soon as you add fuel to the Biomass Burner and connect the power line, the Water Extractor will start pumping water. You can then build pipelines and connect them to Coal Generators or Nuclear Power Plants.

A Water Extractor requires only 20 MW to run, and a Biomass Burner produces 30 MW at standard clock speeds. If you plan to run multiple Water Extractors, you will need more power sources for efficiency. As you progress further in Satisfactory, Biomass Burners won’t suffice for your energy needs. In that case, you will have to use Coal Generators to power Water Extractors and then use the water to run Nuclear Power Plants.
