Satisfactory has two different progression systems: milestones, which are divided into nine tiers, and research trees, which can be unlocked by collecting samples and submitting them to the MAM. There are eight research trees in the MAM.
However, getting the samples necessary for MAM can be difficult without unlocking the ability to scan those resources first through the regular milestone progression unlocks. SAM is a very late-game resource that only comes into play after tier 9, and otherwise being used in any early-game builds, although players can unlock it if they find a deposit early on.

Where to Find SAM In Satisfactory
SAM is scattered around the map, much like nodes of other resources like Quartz and Coal. Players can get the ability to scan SAM one of two ways, either by unlocking the Matter Conversion milestone in tier 9, or by coming across SAM on their own and scanning it using the MAM under the Alien Technology Research Tree.
After you've unlocked the ability to scan the terrain for SAM, you can follow the markers on your compass, leading you to a resource node containing SAM. However, these nodes are often present inside caves that are blocked, or have a boulder on top of them that prevents the player from placing mining rigs on them.
Removing these boulders requires the player to unlock the Nobelisk Detonator. This item lets the player set off charges, blasting apart breakable terrain to unlock new areas and resource nodes. It is locked in the Sulfur Research, which can be easily completed after players get the ability to scan the terrain for sulfur nodes via the Aeronautical Engineering milestone in Tier 7.
There is a SAM node found near Desert Dunes, one of the starting locations for pioneers. However, it is located inside a cave which is blocked by a breakable boulder. It is located at 3447, -2490, and the cave's entrance, which is blocked by a boulder, is at 2845, -2636.

What is SAM Used For In Satisfactory
Strange Alien Matter, commonly referred to as SAM, doesn't seem to follow the known laws of physics. It whispers of new possibilities.
SAM, also known as Strange Alien Matter, is used to create powerful late-game items. It is the main component in the SAM Fluctuators, which are used to create futuristic technologies such as the Alien Power Augmenter, the Dimensional Depot Uploader, and teleportation portals.
Additionally, it is a necessary resource that is needed to build the last phase of Project Assembly and complete the Space Elevator. However, it is the very last resource you need to worry about acquiring. There are a lot of steps that players need to take before getting any use of this physics-defying material.
