Schedule 1 has finally released the game-changing Cartel Update onto the main branch. This significant Schedule 1 update comes much later than originally anticipated, with solo developer Tyler (TVGS) taking their time to get it right.

The Cartel Update was first voted on by the Schedule 1 community a couple of months ago, beating out a Police Expansion update and a Shrooms update. Whether Tyler will revisit the two losing ideas remains to be seen, but for now, his focus has been on completing and releasing the Cartel Update. The patch initially made its way onto Schedule 1's beta branch a few weeks ago, allowing gamers to try it out before it was pushed to all players.

The Schedule 1 Cartel Update patch notes were posted to Steam, confirming the addition of the Benzies Family, "a powerful cartel in Hyland Point." According to Tyler, players will encounter this family in a few interactions, including cartel-player deals, cartel-customer deals, ambushes, dealer robberies, and dead drop theft. It also comes along with changes in how players unlock new Schedule 1 regions. Before they can progress, a new "cartel influence" level must be reduced to a certain point in the previously unlocked area. The Cartel Update has the potential to fundamentally change Schedule 1's core gameplay loop if it works as intended, so it'll be interesting to see how players receive it.

The latest update also includes several minor additions and enhancements. A new purchasable Schedule 1 property, Hyland Manor, has been added, along with a new vehicle and a pump shotgun weapon. There's also a graffiti system, which allows players to spray graffiti on various surfaces to reduce cartel influence and gain XP. Both police and dead/unconscious NPCs can now be pickpocketed, and customers that players attack now won't order for 72 hours. One small addition that could go under the radar is the new automatic save game backup feature. The patch notes state that this "will automatically generate a backup of your save file when you first load it on a new version of the game," which could be a lifesaver for some.

In the patch notes, Tyler apologized for what he describes as a "lack of timeliness with this update," claiming it's releasing "about a month later" than initially intended. He did clarify his intention to "try my best to provide due dates only when I'm really confident that I'll actually be able to make that deadline" going forward. The good news is that the next Schedule 1 community vote will be held next week, so it isn't long before the fans get to have their say once again on what comes next for the game.
