From the famed makers of the highly acclaimed spaceship roguelike, FTL, Into The Breach is a high-stakes, time-bending, mech-wielding strategy title, keeping strategy battles focused on a tight slab of tiles that represent the various isles left on a fast deteriorating earth. Death is actively integrated into this title's story, with every failure on the player's part to defeat the colossal kaiju-styled monsters taking over Earth representing another doomed timeline, before they are sent to a fresh one.

Exploring the politics of a near-doomed earth is the narrative highlight of a game that retains its stakes even across multiple timelines and playthroughs. It's an incredibly novel concept well executed and implemented.

4 Terra Invicta

The Politics Of An Earth Under Invasion

Terra Invicta shapes an incredibly compelling narrative through strategy mechanics based on which of its many varied factions the player picks. Aliens from a frigid and distant corner of the galaxy arrive in the solar system and begin mining dwarf planets to mount an invasion of Earth. Various extra-national groups, unable to agree among themselves, start their own projects to undo this threat.

While each of the game's factions shapes how the aliens are viewed, and thus the nature of the narrative overall, the overall looming presence of these aliens making their way to Earth sets the stakes for an incredibly tense and twisty narrative for players to try and navigate.

3 Warhammer 40,000: Gladius

Explore And Conquer Gladius Prime

  • Released: July 12, 2018
  • Developer: Proxy Studios
  • Platforms: PC

Gladius boasts four distinct, highly engaging, and utterly compelling storylines - one for each of its four main factions. Exploring the randomly generated world of Gladius Prime, players will control either the Astra Militarum, Space Marines, Orks, or Nekrons and forge their own mission for conquest over this incredibly unique relic world. Especially with Space Marine 2's recent release, this is a fantastic title to explore narratives in the 40k universe and gain an understanding of how the major players in this universe operate.

Gladius thrives within the classic 4X formula, but the individualized narratives for each faction make it so much more viscerally fun to come back for replays, each time understanding and gaining perspective on another faction. Even within one faction, the plethora of gameplay choices, and how the world reacts to such choices, make for a highly engaging mix or narrative and mechanics.

2 Age of Wonders: Planetfall

Multiple Factions And A Deep Campaign Mode Make This Title Unmissable

Age of Wonders: Planetfall finds multiple ways to perfect the formula of multiple factions and their interaction with the 4X paradigm. Planetfall does not simply offer six distinct factions to play through the game but provides each with a series of missions that link up perfectly with an incredibly deep story campaign. As the ashes of a long-fallen galactic empire continue to reveal themselves, players must focus on the social and technological development of their civilization, with plenty of branching options that alter not only the overall story but the composition of their faction.

The replay possibilities speak for themselves, but beyond this, shaping the nature of a specific faction as the story unfolds is incredibly addictive. With Age of Wonders 4 still drawing in new players, if this fantasy title was engaging, then Planetfall's more focused storylines and character options might be the next thing to play.

There is something insanely addictive and punchy to the gameplay of Battletech. Playing in colossal mechs, bringing tangible explosive fury with every attack, is just so viscerally satisfying, the deal gets even better when players begin to explore the dark story that sets the scene for this title.

Gaining allegiance with one of the noble houses that decides the fate of humanity's galactic presence means long and hard work as a mercenary, but the galactic politics and intrigue combine with the pulls-no-punches, incredibly violent story of life in the year 3025 to make for one of the best, most gripping narratives in a strategy title to date. The game's incredible array of mods makes subsequent replays that much more compelling.
