Summary

  • Scream 7 features a time jump of at least two years, which will bring fresh new elements to the story.
  • Fans speculate about having multiple Ghostfaces with different motivations to make the sequel more chilling.
  • The upcoming movie will stand out due to changes like its setting in Pine Grove, Indiana, and returning characters like Stu Macher and Roman Bridger.

Director Kevin Williamson recently shared that he was glad to sign on for Scream 7 because the slasher sequel is all about Sidney Prescott (Neve Campbell). One of my biggest questions about the horror movie is how old Sidney's kids are, and since Sidney was pushing a stroller at the start of Scream (2022), I'm curious about the timeline. In an interview with Comicbook.com, writer Guy Busick explained there will be a time jump. He said, "I might get contradicted by other people, but in my mind, more than two years. I would say at least two years. It could be two years, but I would say two years plus.”

I think the time jump is a good idea, especially since fans haven't seen the iconic final girl since Ghostface came back in the fifth movie. After coming across a fan idea about Ghostface, I also think that Scream 7 needs to make a bold choice when it comes to Ghostface.

'I Don't Like Spoilers' David Arquette's Scream 7 Comeback Was Meant To Be Kept Secret, But I Think It's Good Fans Know

David Arquette is reprising his role of Deputy Dewey Riley in Scream 7 and shared in a recent interview that this news was meant to be a surprise.

Scream 7's Time Jump Sounds Great, And I Also Would Love To See A Different Kind Of Ghostface

Ghostface in Scream 6

While I'm thrilled that Scream 7 will have a time jump (and would have been fine if it was more than two years, but two years sounds good to me), I'm crossing my fingers that Ghostface will be impressive and unlike what fans have seen before. A fan replied in a Reddit thread about how the upcoming sequel can stand out from the rest of the franchise, and I think their idea could work. Redditor @ChanceVance would like to see:

"Ghostfaces with different/competing agendas."

Redditor @MagicGoshByJosh replied:

"This is a good way to up the ante by having four killers in a movie without seeming unrealistic, because there could be two competing pairs of Ghostfaces who don’t know who the other pair is."

While fans have been curious about a cult of Ghostfaces, and that is still possible, I like the thought of Ghostfaces who are tracking Sidney down and making a list of enemies for different reasons. Maybe one knows Sidney or someone close to her and wants to get even for a perceived slight, and the others have another motive.

The time jump would also help explain a group of Ghostfaces who have different motivations. Since a lot of time has passed since the last villains targeted The Core Four and Gale Weathers (Courteney Cox), the new Ghostfaces have had plenty of opportunity to come up with a plan of attack. And, since Mason Gooding said the movie is "gory" and "brutal," it would make sense if the Ghostfaces have been waiting for a few years to strike. That would also make the seventh movie scarier than the previous ones. I've never felt terrified watching a Scream movie, but I think if there were a few Ghostfaces who each had their own reason for hunting Sidney, that would be chilling.

Scream 7 Will Stand Out In A Few Important Ways

Even though of course Scream 7 will lean into the familiar nature of the franchise, from returning final girl Sidney Prescott to Ghostface's singular look, some things will be different. The most notable change is the setting. A few months ago, fans found out that Sidney and her family live in the small town of Pine Grove, Indiana.

Another big change? The long list of dead characters who are returning. Two Ghostfaces will be back: Matthew Lillard is playing Stu Macher again, and Scott Foley is reprising his Scream 3 Roman Bridger role. David Arquette is also coming back as Dewey Riley, the charming sheriff who Sidney has known most of her life. It will be interesting to see how all of these characters are woven into the story again.
