Summary
- The Throes of the Watchmaker DLC for Sea of Stars is still under development, with more details coming later this year.
- Sea of Stars was released in 2023 and quickly wowed players, winning Best Independent Game at The Game Awards 2023.
- Along with the upcoming DLC, Sabotage Studio will also be adding a three-player co-op mode.
Sabotage Studio has kept a low profile lately regarding Sea of Stars, but it has finally given an update on the game's upcoming DLC. The developer first announced the DLC back in October 2023, just over a month after the initial release of Sea of Stars. Titled Throes of the Watchmaker, the expansion has simply been described as mysterious and wacky.
Sea of Stars is an indie RPG that quickly captured the hearts of both veteran and new gamers alike. Its colorful aesthetic, a soundtrack by Chrono Trigger's composer Yasunori Mitsuda, and a turn-based battle system that evokes nostalgia from 90s RPGs proved to be the ideal formula for Sea of Stars to become one of the best indie RPGs in recent memory. The title even won Best Independent Game at The Game Awards 2023.
Unicorn Overlord is to Tactical RPGs What Sea of Stars is to Classic JRPGs
Atlus and Vanillaware's Unicorn Overlord looks to provide the same kind of genre 'comfort food' that Sabotage's Sea of Stars delivered.
In October 2023, Sabotage Studio announced that a Sea of Stars DLC was in pre-production, and in January 2024, the project officially began. However, the developer has since been kept quiet about the upcoming content until a brief tweet reignited fans' excitement. When Sabotage Studios announced its fan art contest livestream on Twitter, a fan replied by requesting updates on the DLC. "Production on the DLC is going well. More details will come later this year," the developer responded. In other words, gamers can still expect to hear more about the Throes of the Watchmaker DLC in 2024.
Sabotage Studio Gives Update On Upcoming DLC for Sea Of Stars
When Sabotage Studio first announced that the DLC would be titled Throes of the Watchmaker, fans quickly connected it to the character of the same name. The Watchmaker is a discreet ally of the Solstice Warriors. While she aids the protagonists during their campaign, she doesn't do it blatantly, suggesting but not confirming she's an ally. The Watchmaker is also the creator of Sea of Star's best minigame, Wheels, which may also receive updates in the DLC, such as new units and opponents.
Meanwhile, Sabotage has been teasing players with other game updates, such as a Sea of Stars three-player co-op mode. This new mode, dubbed Single Player+, was announced in March with a teaser showing that each player will be able to independently control one of the three party members during map exploration. The developer stated that each player would maintain their respective character in battles and hinted at a new feature called "Co-op timed hits." That was the only announcement the mode has received so far.
If Sea of Stars follows a similar roadmap as Sabotage Studio's The Messenger, the DLC may launch a year after the RPG's release, or at least receive an official trailer. As the developer mentioned on Twitter, fans can expect more details in 2024.
