Summary

  • Sea of Stars has hit over 6 million players.
  • The RPG just recently added co-op with its big new update.
  • The upcoming Throes of the Watchmaker DLC promises an additional adventure for Sea of Stars fans.

Developer Sabotage Studio has recently revealed that Sea of Stars has reached over 6 million players. For those unfamiliar with the game, Sea of Stars is a turn-based RPG inspired by the classics.

Sea of Stars was originally released in 2023, and it marked a pretty strong tonal shift for the developer Sabotage Studio, who previously worked on the 2D platformer The Messenger. Mixing smooth gameplay with an intriguing storyline, Sea of Stars achieved critical success, with an average critic score of 89 on OpenCritic. Besides being launched for PC and consoles, Sea of Stars was added to Xbox Game Pass as a day one release.

Now, Sabotage Studio has revealed that over 6 million people have played Sea of Stars since its release just over a year ago. It’s not exactly clear how many of these people purchased the game, though, considering that it’s available on Xbox Game Pass. In any case, the title has likely sold well, especially when considering the high number of positive reviews on other platforms.

Sea of Stars Reached Over Six Million Players

Another indication of the RPG’s big success was the surprise physical release of Sea of Stars. The game was originally only sold digitally, but earlier this year, Sabotage announced a special boxed copy of Sea of Stars, which came with a double-sided poster, sticker sheets, a slipcase, and a retro game manual.

Sabotage’s continued updates for the game may have also played a part in its success. Earlier this month, Sea of Stars received local co-op support for up to three players with a new Dawn of the Equinox Update. The update was among the largest ones the game has received yet and made several important changes to Sea of Stars. Some of the other changes include a new cutscene, difficulty presets, and the Speedrunner Mode Relic.

Announced back in July, Sea of Stars’ Throes of the Watchmaker DLC is still in development. The DLC is expected to bring a side adventure to the main campaign, focused on the Watchmaker, and giving players the opportunity to return to Clockwork Castle. At the moment, it is still unknown what’s next for Sabotage Studio after the team finishes the Sea of Stars DLC. While the developer has already hinted that the next title will be focused on “balance,” it’s still unknown whether the release will be another turn-based RPG or if the developers may end up moving to a completely different genre.
