Sea of Stars, has released its first, and perhaps only, major DLC expansion, Throes of the Watchmaker. The award-winning turn-based RPG is currently sitting at a comfortable Very Positive rating on Steam and an impressive 97% on OpenCritic, and for good reason. Released by Sabotage Studios in 2023, Sea of Stars instantly grabbed the attention of players and critics alike, who praised almost everything about the game, from its charming art style, soundtrack, and combat design to its immersive story and charismatic cast of characters.

In November 2024, Sabotage released The Dawn of Equinox update for Sea of Stars, a comprehensive patch that added a number of features fans had been asking for. Three-player co-op was introduced to the game so that friends could experience the adventures of Valere and Zale together. Combat was revamped, including a balancing pass to incorporate player feedback, and Sea of Stars also now offers three difficulty presets to choose from. A speedrunner Relic was added to make things easier for people looking to quickly zip through the game; the Parrot Relic was also tweaked to make it more efficient at hunting down collectibles.

Sea of Stars’ free Throes of the Watchmaker update, released on May 20, is a gameplay expansion and not just an update . It introduces more than eight hours of content—featuring additional areas, dungeons, mini-games, puzzles—to explore, as well as new music from Eric W. Brown, joined by guest composer Yasunori Mitsuda. The DLC also adds more NPCs, enemies, and bosses to run into.

Sea of Stars' Throes of the Watchmaker Expansion Launches

Main characters Valere and Zale are also getting new playable classes: Zale can now become a Juggler, and Valere an Acrobat. These of course come with new attacks, damage types, and combos to try out. The pair will also run into a new friend and playable character named Arty, a friendly robot who serves as an Artificer with the ability to shoot lasers. Additionally, new figurines will be joining the lineup of characters to try out in Sea of Stars’ engaging Wheels minigame, and the three-player co-op mode introduced in The Dawn of Equinox will be available as well.

In Throes of the Watchmaker, Sea of Stars' post-game Valere and Zale will travel to the carnival-themed clockwork world of Horloge, which offers a uniquely themed location to distinguish it from the main game’s story and settings. It’s currently unknown whether Sabotage has additional content planned for Sea of Stars or whether Throes of the Watchmaker marks the final major chapter for the game. But for those who would like to see more from the developer, 2018’s side-scrolling platformer The Messenger loosely takes place in the same world, far in the future.
