Sea of Thieves has been an Xbox exclusive since its launch, but its recent collaboration with Disney has PlayStation players hopeful. The open-world pirate-themed game was developed by Rare and published by Microsoft Game Studios back in 2018.
The game's latest season of content, known as Sea of Thieves: A Pirate's Life, has ignited more interest in the already successful game. Despite its past exclusivity, PlayStation players are likely hoping it makes its way across consoles with this major update.
Updated on January 2nd, 2022 by Hodey Johns: This continues to be a hot topic with lots of developments despite no official word on the subject. The gaming industry is, of course, a business, and as a business, it's tied up in contracts, revenue analysis, and corporate alliances. What's good for gamers isn't exactly the first thing in mind for those who have the decision in their hands. Still, with everything happening inside and outside of the game, it's worth looking at this question again. This article has been updated to answer the question and conjecture about what the future could be.
Sea Of Thieves Is Not Available On Any PlayStation Device
Unfortunately, there is no way to play Sea of Thieves on a PlayStation. S ea of Thieves is currently only out on Xbox One, Xbox Series X/S, and on PC. This leaves PlayStation players unable to jump into the cross between Pirates of the Caribbean and Sea of Thieves.
This collaboration may have opened up a door for Disney, but the battle between Xbox and PlayStation exclusivity is as intense as ever. Microsoft is well aware of Sony's desire to have the game on their consoles so players can show off their amazing cosmetic item sets in crossplay and is reluctant to give them what they want.
The Outlook Is Not Good
The biggest issue is that the developing studio for the game is Rare which belongs to Xbox Game Studios now. Even if the studio is somehow cut loose (which is also very doubtful), the game was developed under an exclusivity arrangement with the parent corporation.
It's really a shame because so many of the secrets still remain undiscovered and another player base could be exactly what the world of Sea of Thieves needs. It's not impossible, but there isn't really any chatter about this being a possibility, at least not publicly.
There Is A Chance
Remember that MLB The Show 21 recently landed on Xbox platforms despite being a PlayStation exclusive and developed by a Sony-owned studio. This was reportedly a decision made by Major League Baseball, but there is a similar for Sea of Thieves to also make the leap.
Because there are in-game purchases, it could be worth it for Xbox to allow PlayStation to sell the game so long as they keep a sizable portion of the sales. This is a careful balancing act to do, but it is one that has been done before.
Sea of Thieves was released on March 20th, 2018, and is available for PC, Xbox One, and Xbox Series X/S.
