Sea of Thieves Season 14 gives players numerous ways to be sneaky, like crouching, shooting blowdarts with deadly effects, or creeping around while hidden inside barrels or chests. Although Sea of Thieves previously introduced stealthy emotes like Chest Hide, learning how to hide in a barrel or chest disguise can help you get the edge over other pirates in a different and much sneakier way.

While the Barrel Disguise and Chest Hide emotes also disguise your pirate, they are stationary actions, and Chest Hide shows your pirate peeking out from within. In contrast, disguises let you completely conceal your pirate from other players and PVE enemies, allowing you to stealthily creep around Sea of Thieves as a barrel or chest.

Additionally, Sea of Thieves Season 14 introduces several different chests and barrel disguises to unlock by completing Commendations, giving you even more ways to hide.

How To Disguise As Chests Or Barrels In Sea of Thieves

Of course, if you want to disguise yourself as a chest or barrel in Sea of Thieves, you can't just pick up any old one in the world and hide in it. To equip the barrel or chest disguise in Sea of Thieves, you must first select it from the Vanity Chest, which you can find on your ship or outside the clothing store at any outpost. In the Vanity Chest menu, scroll to the right to locate the Disguises tab. Here, you can add the Sailor's Chest and Barrel Disguises to your Disguise Radial Wheel, which are disguises available to all players and have no unlock requirements. However, you must complete specific Sea of Thieves Commendations to unlock others. Click on each Disguise to assign it to a slot on your Disguise Radial wheel, which is a similar method to adding emotes like the Sea of Thieves Barrel Disguise emote.

However, you can only activate a disguise when crouching. To crouch in Sea of Thieves, tap the right stick if playing on PlayStation or Xbox, or press Q on the keyboard if playing on a PC. When crouched, hold down on the D-pad or the left shoulder button to open the Disguise Radial Wheel, as pictured above. Click on your chosen Disguise to activate it, showing a short animation of your character hopping inside a barrel or chest, depending on which one you selected. Once disguised, you can freely walk around slowly while hidden inside a barrel or chest. When moving, your pirate's feet are visible, but they vanish from view when standing still (as shown in the video below). This video also shows how to equip disguises via the Disguises Radial compared to the usual Equipment Radial menu for the Barrel Disguise and Chest Hide emotes.

Other players won't see your name tag when you disguise yourself as a barrel or chest and will see the object's standard action prompt instead, such as 'Open Barrel.' If you are trying to hide, be careful not to exit the disguise in any way, such as by jumping or canceling the action. Disguises also don't work in water, where crouching isn't possible. However, you can equip disguises to creep around ships or on land.
