The top 20 best-selling Sega Dreamcast games of all time have recently been revealed – and unsurprisingly, Sonic Adventure, Crazy Taxi, and Sega Sports games dominated the top of the charts. From NFL and NBA games to SoulCalibur and Shenmue, these Dreamcast games made their mark as the most successful games on Sega’s final home console.
The Sega Dreamcast was released in North America on September 9, 1999, bringing the revolutionary console to a whole new audience. Though the popular retro gaming system garnered a significant cult following, it was unfortunately unable to compete with the PlayStation 2, which was released in March 2000, leading the console to discontinue support and production almost exactly a year after its rival’s launch, marking Sega’s withdrawal from the console war.

That said, the Dreamcast is still a beloved console, even 26 years after it was released. As a part of the celebration of the system’s anniversary, Circana senior director and video game industry thought leader Mat Piscatella shared a list on BlueSky revealing the top 20 Dreamcast games in the U.S. By dollars made and units sold. NFL 2K and NFL 2K1 made the most money, with Sonic Adventure close behind. However, Sonic Adventure actually sold the most units overall, with NFL 2K and Crazy Taxi in the second and third place positions.

Tomb Raider: The Last Revelation |
Overall, sports games dominate the list, with Sega Sports titles alone making up almost half of both charts. Beyond Sonic Adventure 1 and 2 and Crazy Taxi, fans can also find popular games like SoulCalibur, Shenmue, House of the Dead 2, Resident Evil: Code: Veronica, and even Tomb Raider: The Last Revelation on these lists.
Piscatella shared this list due to popular demand after sharing similar ones for the 30th anniversary of the PlayStation’s release in North America, also on September 9. Call of Duty and Grand Theft Auto dominated the multi-console list, with well over half of the entries across the charts, though Minecraft claimed the second top-selling game by units across all PlayStation consoles, and Rockstar's Red Dead Redemption 2 made third on both. Interestingly enough, Tony Hawk’s Pro Skater 1 and 2 – both of which can be found on the Dreamcast list – also made the PlayStation 1-specific list, proving the popular skating simulator was a multi-platform success.
On August 29, Sega released Shinobi: Art of Vengeance to critical acclaim, and its upcoming Sonic Racing: CrossWorlds kart game is set to release on September 25. Sega may have bowed out of the console war almost 25 years ago, but the company is clearly still a big swinger in the video game industry.
