Sifu developer Sloclap has released more information about upcoming post-launch content. However, it seems like fans shouldn't get their hopes up for any multiplayer modes soon.
Sifu is the latest beat 'em up brawler published by French studio Sloclap, currently available on Windows, PlayStation 4 and PlayStation 5. Sifu garnered a strong reception as many critics praised the narrative, combat, and environments. Despite a challenging learning curve and an aging mechanic, both of which encourage replay value, many fans are already eager for more content.
Sloclap has said that it is set to continue development on the title, but it has no intention of including multiplayer. Félix Garczynski, marketing manager at Sloclap, stated "Sifu will remain single-player only" and reinforced the company's "focus on creating an immersive and distinctive single-player experience." Garczynski didn't reveal too much more about the future of Sifu and indicated towards the post-launch content that's in the works.
This vagueness leaves a lot to the imagination. Sifu players will likely be expecting new levels and bosses, and those that enjoy a challenge will be looking for additions to the trophy list. However, one thing is for certain, fans of the brawler game shouldn't expect multiplayer. Unlike Sloclap's previous title, Absolver, Sifu has moved away from online dueling. This change came as no surprise, as Sloclap confirmed that Sifu would be a complete single-player story over a year ago.
The decision to reject multiplayer is probably a wise one. Garczynski mentioned that Sloclap is "an independent studio with limited means" and the determination to focus these resources on a fully fleshed single-player narrative has paid off. Sifu is currently sitting at 81/100 on Metacritic, and reviews since the game's release have been favorable. With more games committing to an always-online model, Sifu demonstrates that gamers still respond positively to story-focused gameplay. Some of the more hardcore fans may even be considering picking up the physical edition of the game with collectors content, when it's available.
It is easy to see why players would like to see an online mechanic included in Sifu. The gameplay is challenging but rewarding, and the combat mechanics have a fierce learning curve. Many players have already mastered these tricky mechanics and are looking to test their skills on other players. Unfortunately, that's not going to be the case with Sifu. However, players looking for that multiplayer challenge should check out Sloclap's previous title Absolver. Absolver was the studio's debut title, another martial arts-themed action game. Packed full of customization and an open world, Absolver merges Sloclap's skills in world development with online mechanics.
Sifu developer Sloclap are keeping a tight lid on the future of their game. Nonetheless, fans of the game and studio will likely be excited about the promise of upcoming post-launch content.
Sifu is available now on PlayStation 4, PlayStation 5, and Windows.
