Silent Hill 2 Remake: How to Get 'Leave' Ending

As a series, Silent Hill games have always had numerous endings. The criteria to unlock these endings vary, but there is more than one way for each story to reach its conclusion. Some can be obtained on the first playthrough, while others can only be seen via New Game+.

All of the original endings (including the two joke endings) have returned in Silent Hill 2 Remake and are all unlocked the same way as they were in the original. The tricky part about the original endings is that it isn't immediately clear how you actually get one ending over another. If you are looking to see the 'Leave' ending, here is how you can get it.

How to Get the 'Leave' Ending in Silent Hill 2 Remake

Of the original endings, 'Leave' or 'Maria' are the two endings that most players will likely see first. The reason for this is that there are very specific criteria that the game keeps track of but doesn't tell you, and they are as follows:

Looking at the photo of Mary
How you interact with Maria
How often you heal
What you choose to do in the hallway before the final boss

While there is no dialogue indicating as such, one of the first things you should do to get the 'Leave' ending is to look at the picture of Mary often. You don't need to spend long looking at it, just pull the photo out every now and again.

Other than that, one of the most significant factors for getting the 'Leave' ending is how you treat Maria. If you want to get this ending, don't go back to check on Maria at the hospital or the labyrinth. Rescuing Maria from monsters doesn't appear to affect whether you get the 'Leave' ending or not.

While it may seem strange, keeping James healed up is an important part of this ending as well. If James spends too much time in the red, you can inadvertently get another ending known as 'In Water'.

Before the final boss, there is a long hallway. During this section, you will hear a lengthy bit of dialogue from Mary. Stop and listen to the whole thing before you proceed any further. Rushing through this section before Mary is done talking can result in getting the 'Maria' ending instead, depending on your interactions with Maria earlier in the game. If you've done all this, you will get the 'Leave' ending once you have beaten the final boss.
