- A November 2024 patch aimed to fix Silent Hill 2's issues on PS5 Pro, but could only do so partially.
Bloober Team has confirmed that it is still working on a proper PlayStation 5 Pro enhancement update for the Silent Hill 2 remake. The game's PS5 Pro patch struggled with major issues related to image quality, and six months later, the Silent Hill 2 remake still doesn't offer any meaningful upgrades when running on the mid-generation system.
At the time of the PS5 Pro's launch in late 2024, the Silent Hill 2 remake was advertised as one of numerous games that would leverage the console's beefier hardware. However, players quickly discovered that not only was there no significant visual upgrade, but Silent Hill 2 actually ran worse on the PS5 Pro compared to the base PS5. This unexpected downgrade included a noticeable shimmering effect and flickering reflections due to issues with the Silent Hill 2 remake's PSSR (PlayStation Spectral Super Resolution) implementation.
Doom: The Dark Ages Seems to Be Having Trouble on PS5 Pro
Doom: The Dark Ages is having trouble maintaining a high frame rate on PS5 Pro during intense sections, unlike one surprising console.
In response to the backlash, Bloober Team released Patch 1.06 for the Silent Hill 2 remake in November 2024, which was meant to address some of these graphical issues on PS5 Pro. While the update managed to fix some of the problems, the shimmering effect persisted. Now, Bloober Team has broken its silence surrounding Silent Hill 2's PS5 Pro patch with a brief but telling update via Eurogamer. The developer stated, "We're working with the publisher on a solution and will share more details as soon as we have them."
Bloober Team Continues to Work on Silent Hill 2's PS5 Pro Upgrade
This confirms that a full-fledged PS5 Pro upgrade for the Silent Hill 2 remake remains in the works at Bloober Team, but has yet to materialize. The studio has not committed to a release window for this update, which begs the question of what could be holding Silent Hill 2 back from reaping the benefits of the PS5 Pro. Notably, games like Star Wars Jedi: Survivor, Call of Duty: Black Ops 6, and Avatar: Frontiers of Pandora faced similar issues on PS5 Pro, but were addressed not long after they were discovered. Hopefully, Bloober Team will be able to deliver the PS5 Pro upgrade for Silent Hill 2 sooner rather than later.
These instances of botched PSSR implementations have supposedly beckoned Sony to take a look under the hood as well. Reports suggest that the gaming giant has rolled out several iterations of PSSR since the PS5 Pro's launch, and is continually working to improve the AI-powered image upscaler. Recently, it was rumored that Sony is gearing up to launch a massively upgraded version of PSSR - unofficially dubbed PSSR 2 - that could enable 4K 120fps and 8K 60fps gaming on the PS5 Pro.
