Venturing into the town of Silent Hill, players will find several notes, photos, and even interactable scenes throughout Silent Hill 2 Remake. James will often pick these up, tucking them away in his jacket, which 'apparently' has unlimited space.

But why should players go on a scavenger hunt, exploring every nook and cranny of a location to find out these collectibles? Do they change the outcome of the game? Or, are they simply just worth collecting for completionists trying to experience every bit of the game's story? Let's dive further into all the collectibles found in Silent Hill 2 Remake.

All Types of Collectibles in Silent Hill 2 Remake

in water ending letter

There are 120 collectibles in Silent Hill 2 Remake that James can find in different locations. These 120 collectibles include 68 memos, 26 Glimpses of the Past, and 26 Strange Photos. Finding all collectibles of a type will grant a specific trophy for each of them.

Players need to gather all the collectibles of a type in a single playthrough to get the trophy. It can be either the New Game or New Game Plus mode.

To gather all the collectibles, players have to be vigilant during their playthrough and explore each location thoroughly. If you've missed a collectible in an area, there's a chance you won't be able to go back to it locking a particular trophy for that run.

Why are the Collectibles Important in Silent Hill 2 Remake?

The first collectibles to discuss are the memos and notes. While braving the streets of Silent Hill 2 Remake, James will pick up pieces of paper that will act as a narrative device for the game. The memos collected in a playthrough provide one of the following information.

  • Point players at the location to go next.
  • Provide story hints and lore for players to piece together.
  • Act as a hint or a solution to a puzzle or the location of a key item.

Hunting down every last memo or note is a daunting task. It requires extreme patience, even when you're being chased by monsters on the dark streets of South Vale. However, if you're a completionist and want to get every lore device in the game, especially unlock all the trophies, then it's necessary.

glimpse of the past 3

Glimpses of the Past is the developer's clever way to add a little bit of fan service to the remake. These interactable showpiece locations serve as a direct call-back to the original Silent Hill 2.

Checking out said location will play a soothing tune that notifies veteran players that they've stumbled upon something nostalgic. It's something that shows the developer's passion for the project and commitment to stick to the game's roots.

aftermath strange photo

Strange Photos is also a collectible type that's new in the Silent Hill 2 Remake. These are little Polaroid pictures that James finds while exploring the town. These are significant as they may show James' life before coming to Silent Hill or possibly his moments with Mary.

Some also hint at some key plot elements of the story which step into the spoiler territory. But overall, the true significance of these Polaroids is left up to the player's interpretation. So, some players may be able to make story connections with these collectibles, while some won't. They're still worth collecting to get the trophy at least before you make your way towards the end.
