Two popular survival horror game franchises to come out of Japan, Silent Hill and Fatal Frame, have revealed a new collaboration is in the works. Silent Hill and Fatal Frame were two of the most exciting survival horror series to come out of Japan in the early 2000s, so fans of the genre may be pleased to learn of this collab.

Though they come from different developers, the Silent Hill and Fatal Frame franchises have shared some commonalities in recent years. Both Japanese survival horror game series were extremely popular at one time, and they also entered a period of dormancy around the same time, too, with Silent Hill's franchise largely going quiet after 2012, and Fatal Frame doing the same after 2014. Although Fatal Frame hasn't seen a brand-new game released like its Konami competitor has with Silent Hill f, it's been back in the public eye by way of a couple of remsaters and the upcoming Crimson Butterfly remake.

Silent Hill and Fatal Frame Collide

Now, a new collaboration has been announced between Koei Tecmo's Fatal Frame 2: Crimson Butterfly remake and Konami's Silent Hill f, the most recent entry in the Silent Hill series. The announcement arrived from Koei Tecmo, which revealed that collaboration costumes would be arriving as downloadable content in the future. The developer account didn't reveal more than that, but if the collab is hosted across both games, it's likely that the protagonists will be wearing each others' outfits, with Silent Hill f's Hinako receiving Mio and Mayu's outfits, while the sisters are likely to get her school uniform.

Fans responding to the news have had largely positive responses, with many just happy to see some of their favorite Japanese horror games back in the limelight again. Some have expressed curiosity about Fatal Frame 2's costumes, wondering if some of the ones from prior games will see a return. A number of bonus costumes have been announced for Fatal Frame 2: Crimson Butterfly's remake, but so far, some of those available in prior versions of the game haven't been revealed, like the short yukatas or swimsuits added to the Xbox version.

Fatal Frame 2 and Silent Hill f's Thematic Similarities

Aside from being two of the leading Japanese survival horror franchises to come out of the early 2000s, these particular two games to bear some similarities in theme, which makes this crossover all the better. While the original Silent Hill games followed a series of western protagonists, Silent Hill f takes players back to the 1960s of Japan, while Fatal Frame 2 is set in the 1980s. Both games see young female leads struggling to make their way through horrifying encounters inspired by Japanese folklore, with few tools with which to defend themselves. As the games' stories continue, it becomes clear that not everything is how it initially seemed, and the lead characters are forced to make some difficult choices.

No release date has been announced yet for when the Silent Hill f x Fatal Frame 2: Crimson Butterfly DLC will arrive. Fatal Frame 2: Crimson Butterfly is currently set to release on March 12, 2026. It's also not clear if the DLC will be available on all systems, as Fatal Frame 2: Crimson Butterfly is releasing on the Nintendo Switch 2, but Silent Hill f isn't available on that platform. However, that could change in the future. The Silent Hill 2 remake didn't come to Xbox Series consoles for a year after its initial PlayStation launch, and while the developers haven't explicitly revealed a Nintendo Switch 2 version, it's also not out of the question for it to end up there. If any of the Silent Hill franchise comes to Switch 2, it may be announced during the upcoming Nintendo Direct, set for February.
