Silent Hill games have been luring players into their dreaded, mist-choked world for years, where there are more monsters than humans. Apart from the first and third games, each title is usually a stand-alone story centered around the eponymous town, which calls its victims inside its foggy borders for any number of reasons, whether it is a father searching for his missing daughter, or a widower summoned by a letter from his deceased wife.

While certain endings are so simple players will often acquire them purely by accident, there are others obscured by sheer difficulty that would be almost impossible without a guide.

6 Maria - Silent Hill 2

Protecting Maria Is Not As Simple As One Might Think

Maria acted as a central character in the story of Silent Hill 2, a beautiful woman who looks exactly like James' wife, but her outfit, hair, and overall personality could not be any more different. In truth, she is a manifestation born from James' own mind, or a wish, if the name of her scenario is to be believed. Despite this, Maria can still die in the game, which will mean game over. Players need to protect her, especially if they want to achieve the Maria ending.

The Maria ending implies James moves on from his grief and guilt over Maria, stating that she is all he needs. It's a dark and twisted ending, but one that Maria fans will certainly want to achieve. Doing so will be no small feat though, as they will need to do their utmost to protect Maria from all monster attacks, stay close to her, and bump into her less than three times. This all sounds simple in theory, but in practice it is much more difficult, especially on harder difficulties. This is what makes this Silent Hill 2 ending one of the hardest to achieve, as it could result in players needing to restart the whole game in the event that they bump into Maria one time too many.

5 Escape - Silent 4: The Room

Protect Eileen Or This Ending Will Be Unattainable

Separate from the previous three games, Silent Hill 4: The Room is aptly named due to the protagonist, Henry Townsend, being locked in his own apartment after chains and locks appear on his front door. His own escape is through a tunnel that appeared just as suddenly in his bathroom, which gives him access to an alternate dimension filled with fog and strange, hostile creatures. Sound familiar?

Henry won't have to brave the dangers alone, however, as his neighbor, Eileen, will join him for a majority of the game, and she plays a key role in which ending the player will unlock. In the instance of the Escape ending, which is the best ending for the characters, Eileen needs to survive the final confrontation, and players also need to cleanse 80% of the hauntings in their apartment. Keeping Eileen alive might be one of the most difficult tasks, as players need to limit the amount of damage she takes throughout the entire game. One hit too many, and it will be impossible to save her by the time the final boss rolls around.

4 Good+ - Silent Hill

The Key Items Required Are Easily Missed

The first foray into the world of Silent Hill was through the lense of Harry Mason, father to Cheryl, who has run off into the mist-shrouded town, and now he must set about navigating through that town's dangers to save her, meeting others, such as Cybil and Lisa, along the way.

Silent Hill is more straightforward with its endings; two good, two bad, which largely have the same paths, and, of course, the iconic UFO ending that has become a mainstay in the franchise. One of the hardest endings to unlock is Good+, which is considered the best possible ending in the entire game. Players need to follow very strict steps and perform specific actions to unlock it, which will require a detailed guide or in-depth knowledge. Players need to save Kaufmann and rescue Cybil during the boss fight. Achieving these steps is no small feat, but should players be successful, they will be awarded with an ending where Harry adopts a new daughter, and returns to fatherhood with the girl, who would eventually become the protagonist of Silent Hill 3.

Silent Hill 2 is often thought of as the peak entry in the series, following the tragic tale of widower James Sunderland who receives a letter from his deceased wife, prompting him to return to their "special place" in the titular town of Silent Hill. There, he will be faced with an assortment of terrifying creatures, and eventually his own guilt over the murder of his own wife. Whether he succumbs to his guilt or learns to move on is purely in the players' hands, and can result in a different ending.

There are a total of six endings, with two being considered joke endings; one of those is the infamous dog ending. At the end of his long and arduous journey, James realizes his entire journey was a simulation that an adorable shiba inu was behind. All along. Getting to enjoy this humorous ending is not easy, as players will need to achieve the three main endings first, and find the dog key near Rosewater Park, which is easy to miss if players aren't looking for it. Then, it won't come into play until near the end of the game, and it is quite possible the key might be too far buried in the player's inventory and memory for them to remember to use it.

Silent Hill: Shattered Memories is one of the more celebrated games outside the original trilogy, after subsequent releases such as Homecoming and Downpour were not received favorably by fans. The key to its success might be in its return to the series' roots, as it takes fans back to the events of the first game with some light retconning. There are different characters, and part of the game is dedicated to therapy sessions that will present the player with psychological exams that will impact Harry's journey, and the ending.

The UFO ending is the only one not tied to the answers players give to those exams, and unlike the other endings, it is quite difficult to achieve, as Silent Hill UFO endings usually are. Players need to start a New Game+, call the right number on the phone after meeting Cybil, and snap a picture of all the hidden UFOs throughout the game. This is where it gets tricky, as players cannot miss a single one, otherwise they will lock themselves out of this ending. Unless players know exactly where they need to go, some of these UFOs are very easy to miss.

1 Revenge - Silent Hill 3

These Specific Prerequisites Mean This Ending Will Only Be Unlocked By Those In The Know

A continuation of the plot laid out in the first game, Silent Hill 3 follows Harry's daughter, Heather, now a young woman, who unwittingly stumbles into the town of Silent Hill while enjoying a peaceful day out. She becomes embroiled in a plot surrounding a cult and the birth of a god, as she seeks vengeance after her father is killed by Claudia. Like its predecessor, Silent Hill 3 has multiple endings, and one of them should not be taken too seriously by players, even if trying to get this ending will be a very serious undertaking.

The Revenge ending, which is equivalent to the Silent Hill 3 UFO ending, can only be unlocked after multiple playthroughs. The player must first kill 333 enemies across any number of runs - no more, no less - which unlocks the Heather Beam. Then, the player must use this beam in a new game to kill exactly 33 enemies before reaching the apartments, which is where the game will end prematurely with the zany UFO ending. The specific requirements needed to achieve this ending makes this one of the toughest to achieve in the franchise, as it is very possible players could lose count of how many enemies they have killed, which could all too easily result in them locking themselves out of this ending. In fact, it's so obscure that players who aren't already in the know and well informed about its existence could never dream of unlocking it, even by accident.
