While the Silent Hill series is packed full of terrifying and memorable monsters, it also contains its fair share of human characters who have gone on to become beloved by fans. Whether it be because of their confidence and perseverance in times of crisis or even simply just their intriguing and unique personality, there are multiple reasons why a character in a horror game can end up becoming a fan favorite, and it's fair to say there's more than a few of them in Silent Hill.
10 Best Silent Hill Characters, Ranked
Through extreme complexity and certain levels of cool, these Silent Hill characters make a trip to the foggy town well worth it, despite the monsters.
However, they also need to be at least somewhat endearing, since it can be hard to have a lot of love for someone who only wants to spread suffering and pain. The good news is, not everyone who has appeared in the Silent Hill games is as merciless and unforgivable as a few of the villains are, so with that being said, it's time to take a closer look at which individuals are considered the most beloved among fans of this iconic survival horror series.
8 Eileen Galvin
Henry's Innocent Neighbor Gets Caught Up In A Horrifying Nightmare
Silent Hill 4: The Room
- Released
- September 7, 2004
- ESRB
- m
- Genre(s)
- Survival Horror
Though Silent Hill revolves around Henry and his nightmarish adventures in the Otherworld, another character who gets a lot of screen time is his next-door neighbor, Eileen. As someone with no combat abilities to speak of, Eileen is severely under-prepared for dealing with the mutants and ghouls she and Henry come up against, which makes her somewhat relatable. There are also a lot of opportunities in the game to learn more about who Eileen is as a person, as players are able to take a look through the peephole, which reveals some of her interests and hobbies.
Because Henry is often seen as a slightly more plain and rather boring protagonist, Eileen is usually the one who gets the most praise from fans out of the duo when looking back on Silent Hill 4. Though it can definitely be tricky trying to protect her throughout an entire playthrough, she is still a very fun character to follow.
7 Lisa Garland
Lisa's Tragic Story Makes Her An Easy Character To Sympathize With
Silent Hill
- Released
- January 31, 1999
- ESRB
- M For Mature 17+ Due To Animated Blood and Gore, Animated Violence
- Genre(s)
- Survival Horror
The Silent Hill games tend to contain awfully tragic characters, and one of the most well-known is Lisa from the first game. After the young Alessa was burned by her mother and the Cult, Lisa was in charge of taking care of her as a nurse, though the pressure eventually resulted in her getting hooked on narcotics. Long story short, Lisa would end up being blackmailed by a mysterious organization that wanted to keep Alessa alive for their own evil deeds, putting Lisa in a pretty tricky situation.
Silent Hill: Scariest Versions Of Pyramid Head, Ranked
From Silent Hill 2 to Dead By Daylight, Pyramid Head's imposing presence has gone through several scary versions.
Despite seemingly being a very nice and considerate member of the hospital staff, Lisa eventually turns into a grizzly monster later in the game after players have already met her the first time. Still, as someone who genuinely wanted to do things right but ended up in a horrific scenario, she's an easy character to sympathize with.
6 Harry Mason
Harry Is A Selfless Father Who Will Go Through Anything To Rescue His Family
- Silent Hill (1999)
Considering Harry is the first protagonist in the series, he needed to make a good first impression. Thankfully, Harry comes across as a genuinely likable and even relatable protagonist because, to put it simply, he is just an innocent father looking for his missing daughter. Of course, in classic Silent Hill tradition, Harry soon ends up finding himself in some strange and demonic Otherworld, which is crawling with dangerous monsters whom he must overcome as part of the mission.
The sheer lengths Harry is willing to go to in order to save his family are truly commendable and one of many reasons why he's amassed such a massive fan base. Though he technically returns in the remake of the first game, it's the Harry in the first Silent Hill who most fans look back fondly on.
5 Angela Orosco
Angela's Personal Story Is Slowly Revealed Throughout Silent Hill 2
Silent Hill 2
- Released
- October 8, 2024
When Angela is first introduced in Silent Hill 2, it's clear that there's something a little off about her. Though she seems more than willing to help out James at first, she's also someone who makes sure to always keep her distance when encountering strangers, and this comes through as a result of her tragic past, where she was abused by her despicable father.
Throughout Silent Hill 2, Angela is forced to confront her traumatic memories, no matter how horrifying or unpleasant they may be. Like James and Eddie, Angela is working through her own problems, though because of her innocence, it does end up making her a lot easier to sympathize with, and a character no fan of the series will ever be able to forget.
4 Cybil Bennett
One Of The Only Good-Hearted And Honest People Left In Silent Hill
- Silent Hill (1999)
While it's already tricky enough trying to take down all the gruesome monsters that occupy Silent Hill, many of the protagonists will also need to look out for the humans who are still lingering around, too. As is evident through characters like Vincent in Silent Hill 3, many people will jump at the chance to manipulate someone for their own gain, though Cybil, who is introduced in the first game, is the exception.
8 Best Silent Hill Trailers, Ranked
Silent Hill is one of the most iconic franchises in gaming, and it's featured some pretty neat trailers over the years.
Cybil is a police officer who genuinely wants to help Harry get his daughter back and is willing to do anything she can to help him in his search. In fact, Cybil would actually be pretty pivotal to the overall plot of the game, being the one to save Harry from certain death on numerous occasions. Cybil would become such a fan favorite that she even made it into the Silent Hill live-action movie, which is no easy feat considering how many beloved characters there are in this series already.
3 James Sunderland
Many Fans Connected With James' Journey Of Overcoming His Grief And Pain
Silent Hill 2
- Released
- September 25, 2001
- ESRB
- Mature 17+ // Blood and Gore, Violence
- Genre(s)
- Survival Horror
To say James is a complex character would be putting it mildly. As someone who once committed a brutal act that he can never forget, the man is forced to try and navigate his way through his mounting guilt as it threatens to take over his mind. This is essentially what Silent Hill 2 is all about, and though James is a morally gray protagonist, there are also a lot of fans who have been able to connect with his journey over the years.
Dealing with guilt isn't easy, as is made very clear through James, who is forced to literally face his demons as he moves from area to area in an attempt to find his missing wife. Despite that, he is still trying to move on with his life and make peace with what he's done, so it's understandable why many people end up rooting for him in the end.
2 Maria
Maria Has Become An Icon Within Gaming Thanks To Her Mysterious Persona And Fashionable Appearance
- Silent Hill 2
Maria is one of the most mysterious characters in the entire franchise, so much so that there are still debates going on to this very day about who she actually is and what she is meant to represent. This makes her an utterly fascinating character to learn about, but also someone who a lot of players have come to enjoy being around, especially in the excellent remake of Silent Hill 2, where she's fleshed out a little more in terms of her personality.
Since it's heavily implied that Maria is meant to be some sort of distorted memory of James's late wife, it means she's always there to keep him on his toes, often letting out strange riddles without telling him the full story. All of this, paired with her iconic design, has contributed to making Maria one of the most recognizable and beloved characters in all of Silent Hill.
1 Heather Mason
Heather Is A Fun, Bubbly, But Also Realistic Protagonist Who Has Become One Of Gaming's Most Well-Known Heroes
Silent Hill 3
- Released
- August 6, 2003
- ESRB
- M For Mature 17+ Due To Blood and Gore, Violence
- Genre(s)
- Survival Horror
Silent Hill 3 is often considered to be one of, if not the best game in the entire franchise by a lot of fans, and a big reason why it has become so beloved is because of its protagonist, Heather Mason. As a teenage girl, Heather feels much more proactive and vibrant in her personality when compared to the previous heroes, which makes her a ton of fun to follow throughout the story.
Another reason so many people gravitate toward her is because of her overall quirkiness as a character. Heather can switch between being genuinely frightened one minute to throwing out one-liners and silly quips the next, ensuring she never feels bland or predictable as a character. She's also become somewhat of a fashion icon within the world of gaming, being one of the most cosplayed characters in the industry. Simply put, Heather Mason is a gaming icon, being one of the most recognizable and beloved protagonists in the horror genre.
