Bosses are an important part of every Metroidvania, on top of the platforming, which most of the games are popular for. Hollow Knight did a great job with its boss design, and Hollow Knight: Silksong carries that legacy, introducing new and challenging bosses that will leave players scratching their heads trying to figure out a strategy to deal with them.

One of the early game bosses that might pose a challenge to most players is the Hunter's March Guardian or Skarrgard, which is its official name, but doesn't pop up during the fight. The guide below includes information about the boss's attacks, counters, where to find him, and what happens if you defeat him in Hollow Knight: Silksong.

Where to Find the Hunter's March Guardian in Silksong

From The Marrow, you need to make your way to the far right. There are a bunch of enemies and falling platforms, so be careful while traversing through these areas, as the flying bugs can be very annoying. Once you have dealt with all the enemies in your path, you will soon reach a room with red bouncy objects that you can perform a downward slash on to make your way across. On the other side of the Marrow is the path that leads to the Hunter's March, where you will find this boss.

Optimal Runback Route to Hunter's March Guardian

The closest bench to the boss is right below the boss's arena. This is the same area where you will meet Grindle for the first time, who will ask you to free him from his prison cell. If you end up doing so, you will get the Straight Pin, which is a projectile attack you can use which might also come in handy for the coming boss fight.

Counter

Double Slash

Hunter's March Guardian Attacks, Moves, & Counters 1

It will extend its weapon to perform a slash attack twice.

Dash back as soon as you see the animation, and dash back in after the second slash to get a free hit.

Aerial Slam

Hunter's March Guardian Attacks, Moves, & Counters 2

The boss will jump high up in the air.

When you see the jump animation, it is best to dash through the boss to reach the other side, giving you time to get a few hits in.

Burrowing Relocate

Hunter's March Guardian Attacks, Moves, & Counters 3

It digs a tunnel beneath its feet, and smoke will appear wherever the boss is about to pop out from.

This does not count as an attack, but wherever the boss emerges, if you are standing in the way, you will take damage, so just dodge out of the way.

Tips to Beat the Hunter's March Guardian

Even though the boss fight is doable at any point in the game, it is highly recommended that you first unlock the dash ability, also known as the Swift Step. This ability allows you to dash by pressing the R2/RT button on your controller, and holding down the buttons allows Hornet to sprint through the areas. This ability is located inside the Deep Docks, which is below the location of the boss. You will have to access a path that is filled with magma and encounter multiple enemies.

If you want a full walkthrough on the location of the dash ability, then you can check out the guide here.

  • With the Sprint ability, this fight should not pose much of a problem to you, as your main plan should be to dash in and out after every attack.
  • Do not take the risk of attacking twice, as every attack the boss performs deals two mask damage.
  • Be careful of the boss whenever it goes underground, because it can appear underneath you, damaging you while you are not paying attention.
  • Make sure you gain some distance before going for a Bind to heal your wounds.

Reward for Beating the Boss

Reward for Beating the Hunter's March Guardian

There are no item rewards after defeating the boss, but you will get access to the Hunter's March location, which, like every other area, has a few benches and a vendor who sells useful tools. There is also a very challenging boss fight on the right side of the area, which will require the Drifter's Cloak ability that you acquire inside Far Fields.
