One of the biggest changes in Hollow Knight: Silksong compared to the original is how Hornet performs the downward attack. Unlike the Knight, who attacked directly downward, Hornet’s downward slash comes at a 45-degree angle, a move that is much more difficult to master.
For players who prefer Hollow Knight’s original downward slash animation, there is a solution. Silksong offers multiple Crests, the in-game term for weapons, and each one works differently. One of them, the Wanderer Crest, is the closest thing to the original Hollow Knight’s moveset in Silksong. Not only does it have a faster attack animation, but its downward slash works exactly like in the first game, making it the obvious choice for players struggling with the new system.
What to Do First in Silksong
At the start of the game, prioritize these things to do first in Silksong to meet important NPCs and unlock useful items and abilities.
Unlocking Hornet’s Swift Step (Dash) ability first before attempting to obtain the Wanderer’s Crest is recommended, but it is not a requirement.
How to Get Wanderer Crest in Hollow Knight: Silksong
Hollow Knight Vertical Downslash Weapon
The Wanderer Crest is located in a hidden area in the western corner of Bone Bottom in Silksong. To get it, you will need to use a Simple Key to unlock the door west of Mosshome, travel through the Wormways to reach the Chapel of the Wanderer, and complete a gauntlet challenge.
If you’re short on currency, Mosshome is one of the best places to farm Rosaries in Silksong.
Here’s a step-by-step process of how to unlock the Wanderer Crest. If you’ve already unlocked the Mosshome Elevator, skip to step 7.
-
Purchase a Simple Key from Pebb in Bone Bottom for 500 Rosaries.
-
Head toward Mosshome by climbing up through The Marrow.
- Turn left and continue straight until you reach a platform with a lever. Activate it to unlock the trapdoor underneath.
-
Descend through the trapdoor and move left.
- Drop down until you reach a locked Elevator. Pull the lever nearby to connect it to Bone Bottom.
- Ride the Elevator down and rest at the bench to update your respawn point.
-
Use the Elevator again to return to the upper platforms.
-
Cross the chasm using the two suspended cages. You can reach them by using Swift Step mid-jump or by pogoing nearby flying enemies.
-
Continue left and carefully avoid the acid from the enemy in the next chamber. Use the stone platforms as cover.
-
Use the Simple Key to unlock the door, revealing the path to the Wormways.
- Here, avoid the two sandworms falling from the ceiling to find a hole in the ground you can drop into.
-
Drop into the pit and follow the tunnel system down until you eventually find yourself on a ledge in a mossy green area.
-
Drop all the way down to the bottom.
-
On the right is an unlockable shortcut that leads back to the main Bone Bottom area, whereas to the left is a dilapidated hut called the Chapel of the Wanderer.
- The Wanderer Crest is located inside the Chapel of the Wanderer, guarded by a room full of enemies.
Defeat the enemies and "Bind" the crest from the final chamber. Hornet will automatically switch to the Wanderer Crest. To switch, customize, or upgrade your crest, you will need to rest at a bench.
