11 months ago, EA shut down popular mobile game The Simpsons: Tapped Out, a city-builder that let fans build their very own version of the iconic Springfield utilizing iconic locations and characters from the long-running show. Developed by EA Mobile, The Simpsons: Tapped Out first hit the scene in 2012, and while it earned mixed reviews thanks to its heavy use of microtransactions, it still developed a dedicated fanbase that made playing the game a daily ritual of theirs for well over a decade.

Considering how long some fans had been playing The Simpsons: Tapped Out, it's no surprise that its demise caused them a great deal of grief. EA announced well in advance that it was going to shut down The Simpsons: Tapped Out in January 2025, and it followed through with that promise, bringing the game's servers down and effectively killing it. Fans created petitions and made pleas to EA to reconsider its decision, but their efforts were ultimately in vain.

In the span of only two years, EA has shut down the servers for a long list of games, and that list is likely to grow in the future.

The Simpsons: Tapped Out shut down roughly 11 months ago, but franchise fans are still in mourning. A visit to the game's subreddit shows people still making posts lamenting the loss of their Simpsons: Tapped Out town, with some still refusing to even delete the app 11 months after the fact. Some Simpsons: Tapped Out fans still hold out hope that EA will one day turn the lights back on, but they shouldn't hold their breath. Once EA shuts down a game, that game is gone forever — in an official capacity, at least.

Simpsons Fans Are Still Sad About Tapped Out's Demise

Some Simpsons: Tapped Out fans managed to revive the game with their own servers, with some lucky players even able to retain the progress they had made on their own before EA pulled the plug. Even though EA is effectively done with The Simpsons: Tapped Out, there's always the risk that fan-supported projects like this will get the axe, and so anyone interested should keep that in mind. Still, for those longing to return to their mobile version of Springfield, or start a new one from scratch, that option is there.

The uproar caused by The Simpsons: Tapped Out being shut down shows that there is a clear appetite for Simpsons video games. No new Simpsons video game has been announced at the time of this writing, but there have been calls to make a Simpsons: Hit & Run remaster or bring back the 2007 Simpsons game. Whether that ever happens remains to be seen, but with a new Simpsons movie on the horizon, perhaps the chances are better now than ever before.

The Simpsons: Tapped Out was one of the first games shut down by EA in 2025, but it was far from the only one. 2025 was a bloodbath when it comes to EA's mobile games, and the company also shuttered the servers of some beloved sports titles as well. There's at least one more EA game shutting down in 2025 (Grid 2019 on December 19), but it's always possible even more games will be added to the chopping block before the year is out.

As far as 2026 goes, EA has confirmed two games that will be shut down next year. Anthem servers will be closed on January 12, while NBA Live 19 will be shutting down on January 30. It's highly likely many more games will be shut down by EA next year, so fans should keep an eye out in case they want to play any of the departing games before their closures.
