The Sims 4: Enchanted by Nature introduced fairies, a much-requested life state and occult, to The Sims 4. Occult Sims are a popular addition to The Sims 4. Supernatural features have been a staple of The Sims since the very first game, with some repeats over the iterations of the different versions of the franchise. Playable Sims could become occults due to The Sims: Makin' Magic which added spellcasting, but a more in-depth system and classification came with The Sims 2.
Fairies are the latest occult element added to The Sims 4, but they likely won't be the last. For better or worse, The Sims 4 is going to stick around for a while yet, and fairies are the last in line for occults from previous games.
The Sims 4: Occult Species, Ranked
The occult species in The Sims 4 let players spice things up in interesting ways. Here's each one, ranked.
The Release of Fairies Gives The Sims 4 Room to Explore New Ideas
Occults tend to lean into traditional monsters from Western fairy tales and folklore, such as werewolves, vampires, and fairies. Each version of The Sims has brought its own version of occults based on popular culture at the time. For example, The Sims 2's vampires were based off of Gothic horror literature and cinema, such as Dracula, while The Sims 3's vampires were based off Twilight, sparkling skin and all.
There are occults purely original to the world of The Sims, and some of these occults have become very popular with Simmers. Original occults include:
- Servos
- PlantSims
- Imaginary Friend
With fairies added to the list of life states, there are very few occults types left for The Sims 4 to reimagine. This opens the door for The Sims 4 to create new life states, and history has shown that the original concepts for The Sims 4 have been well-received.
The Sims 4 Has the Chance to Kickstart a New Era
Reimagined pack concepts are popular with players, but new ideas are also welcome and important. Expansion packs that explore new ideas in The Sims 4 include:
- The Sims 4: Get Together
- The Sims 4: Eco Lifestyle
- The Sims 4: Snowy Escape
- The Sims 4: Cottage Living
- The Sims 4: Life and Death
- The Sims 4: Businesses and Hobbies
Some of these rank as the most popular expansion packs for The Sims 4, and bring innovative gameplay and aesthetic elements to Create-a-Sim and Build Mode. The same could be said for occult Sims, but occults unique to The Sims 4 would need to be implemented better than The Sims 4's PlantSims, which have been criticized for shallow gameplay and its status as a temporary life state.
Life and Death's reincarnation cycle, Eco Lifestyle's recycling and sustainable living features, and Cottage Living's Simple Living lot challenge are all transformative for gameplay, and unique to The Sims 4.
New occults can join the ranks with new expansion pack ideas for The Sims 4. As EA's Laura Miele has recently confirmed, there are no plans to develop The Sims 5, and The Sims 4 will continue as an evergreen project, with Project Rene serving as a separate project alongside The Sims 4:
"We put out over 85 content packs over the last 10 years on The Sims 4, and so resetting that is not player-friendly and not a good idea for our community."-Laura Miele, President of EA Entertainment
The Sims 4 can breathe new life into add-on content by giving players original concepts and ideas that go beyond what previous games in The Sims franchise have done. Creating an entire game pack around a new occult could be a challenge, but adding one to an expansion pack, like Imaginary Friends from The Sims 3: Generations, or The Sims 4: Enchanted by Nature, could go a long way in forging a new era for The Sims 4.
