The Sims 4 has received more than 15 million new players over the span of the past 12 months. Since publisher EA's decision to take The Sims 4 down the free-to-play route in 2022, the life simulator's playerbase has grown by leaps and bounds and is showing no signs of stopping.

Since The Sims franchise kicked off in 2000, it has spawned four mainline games along with several different spin-offs and dozens of DLC packs. During this time, the life simulation game series has gone on to rival wildly popular IPs like Mario and Call of Duty in sales, becoming one of the best-selling game franchises ever, with a total of well over 200 million units sold. The latest entry, 2014's The Sims 4, also experienced remarkable sales from the get-go in spite of receiving lukewarm critical reviews at the time of its launch.

In the new earnings report for Q2 FY25, EA announced the addition of 15 million new Sims 4 players over the past year, as the game "continues to expand." The American publisher noted that "increased engagement" in life simulator The Sims 4 led to "higher-than-expected" net bookings for the series in the second quarter. Unfortunately, it wasn't revealed what the total player count for the game was after adding the new batch of players.

  • 15 million new players

As per the report, the strong performances of The Sims 4, Madden NFL, EA Sports FC, and College Football 25 have allowed EA to raise its "FY25 outlooks." While Madden NFL and College Football franchises are collectively set to breach the USD 1 billion mark in net bookings this fiscal year, interest in American football titles among new players has more than doubled year-on-year, with engagement in Q2 increasing by 140% year-on-year. Moreover, College Football 25 sales growth meant it was the best-selling game in North America during September. The publisher also stated that EA Sports FC witnessed live-service growth on all platforms, picking up where the franchise left after a record-setting FY24. Overall, the net bookings for Q2 FY25 were recorded at USD 2.079 billion, whereas the net revenue amounted to USD 2.025 billion.

As EA continues to record strong numbers for The Sims 4, fans are eagerly waiting to see what developer Maxis does next in the genre. Right now, Project Rene is the studio's main undertaking and is being dubbed as an evolution of The Sims IP. Although very little about the game is known so far, it is understood to be an online multiplayer Sims title. Undoubtedly, longtime Sims players will be excited to finally see a new chapter in the franchise unfold after 10 years.
