The mysterious Greybeards gift the Dragonborn a few new powers in Skyrim. However, they seem to only give the Dragonborn the first word in a very useful shout, that of ‘Wuld’. This is the beginning of the Whirlwind Sprint shout, which is one of the best shouts in Skyrim. However, players might want to know where to get the Whirlwind Sprint shout and finish the three words to master its power.
What makes the Whirlwind Sprint such a great shout is the fact that it can send players forward over 20 feet. This means that players can traverse great distances in short bursts of time. The Whirlwind Sprint can be found in a few locations that will have the Dragonborn unlock the full potential of this great and useful shout.
Wuld – “Whirlwind” Location
After the Dragon Rising quest, players will have successfully killed their first dragon just outside of Whiterun. Here, they will learn of the power to absorb dragon souls and kill them for good, thus proving to the Whiterun guards that they are the Dragonborn. Upon doing so, the skies will shout, which is the Greybeards calling for the Dragonborn to come to High Hrothgar. This will begin The Way of the Voice quest.
After venturing to High Hrothgar, players will meet the Greybeards, and their talkative leader, Arngeir, who will teach them the power of the Thu’um and their dragon voice. During this quest, players will learn the first word of Whirlwind Sprint ‘Wuld’. The knowledge of this word is transferred to the player, meaning they do not need to spend a dragon soul to learn it or find it at a Word Wall.
This is as far as the Greybeards will go when it comes to Whirlwind Sprint. They may teach the word, and its meaning, and give the power to use it, but they will only provide players with the first part of said word. They will demonstrate its use, which some players, they may find useful to see just how efficient this shout can be in both combat and speed efficiency.
There is also a glitch worth noting, in which if players have already spent a dragon soul on Whirlwind Sprint, they can learn the next part of the word from Master Bori, as well as receive a recognition of the word’s knowledge from Arngeir. This can be useful to those that want to skip one of the two locations players can find Whirlwind Sprint.
Nah – “Fury” Location
Now that players have acquired the first part of the Whirlwind Sprint, they may wonder where to find the second part of this powerful shout. Players will want to bring their armor and their weapons to the west of Solitude, where they will seek out the Nordic ruin, Volskygge. This can be located between Deepwood Redbout and Lost Echo Cave and will house the ‘Nah’ word for Whirlwind Sprint.
Players will have to venture through the location of Volskygge, but it is probably best that players are at least level 24 due to the evils that lurk inside. What awaits players within the barrow is the world wall that will contain the second part of Whirlwind Sprint, along with the Dragon Priest, Volsung.
It’s always great to find one of the Dragon Priests, as these eight high-ranking Dragon Priests in Skyrim all have a unique mask, and are all needed if players are to obtain the secret Dragon Priest mask. However, the main prize from Volskygge will be the second word for Whirlwind Sprint, which will further increase both the distance of Whirlwind Sprint and the time needed until players can use a dragon shout.
Kest – “Tempest” Location
Another location that will house a world wall that contains the Whirlwind Sprint word is Dead Men’s Respite, another Nordic ruin. This Nordic ruin can be located in the southwest region of Morthal, and is a fairly easy area to clear, as it does not involve Dragon Priests. Players will fight the usual dungeon foes, like Frostbite Spiders, Skeevers, and Draugr.
It is worth noting that Dead Men’s Respite is also related to a side quest called Tending the Flames, which involves learning the truth of a deceitful King, essential to becoming a member of the Bards College. Players will have relative ease when venturing through Dead Men’s Respite, but it’s still best to bring weapons and armor, and their brain, considering the puzzle elements to Dead Men’s Respite that players will need to complete if they are to proceed onward.
Players will venture through the Nordic ruin, and find the last location and tomb of King Olaf. Here, and after defeating the rising dead king, players will be able to learn the word of power from the Word Wall, and thus claim another piece of the Whirlwind Sprint puzzle. With the ‘Kest’ word learned and a dragon soul placed into the Whirlwind Sprint shout, players would have mastered one of the first, best, and most important shouts in all of Skyrim.
