The Elder Scrolls 5: Skyrim is chock-full of optional areas for players to explore. Sometimes, entering one of these areas will result in the Dragonborn beginning a hidden side quest that requires them to venture deeper and uncover what lies ahead, and the "Forgetting About Fjola" quest is no exception.

Skyrim's "Forgetting About Fjola" quest tasks the Dragonborn with helping a man named Christer locate his wife, Fjola. Christer believes that his wife has been kidnapped by a group of bandits and has been searching Skyrim for months in the hope of finding her. Believing he is incapable of infiltrating the bandits' hideout, he asks the Dragonborn to look for Fjola in his stead.

How To Start The Forgetting About Fjola Side Quest

The Mistwatch fortress in Skyrim

Before the Dragonborn can find Christer and begin the "Forgetting About Fjola" side quest, they must travel to Mistwatch and find a way to get inside. Those who have yet to visit this location can do so traveling directly south from Windhelm and using the opening in the western wall to get inside the keep. Mistwatch is crawling with bandits, so players should proceed with caution during their first visit.

Lowering the Mistwatch drawbridge in Skyrim

The Dragonborn will need to enter Mistwatch North Tower in order to begin the "Forgetting About Fjola" side quest. To reach the entrance, the player must use the lever across from the drawbridge to create a path. Inside, Christer can be found in the hallway next to the locked door; upon approaching him, he will ask the Dragonborn to help him locate his wife. The Mistwatch Key will then be added to the Dragonborn's inventory and can then be used to open the locked door next to the hallway's entrance.

Meeting Christer in Skyrim

Passing through the previously locked door, the Dragonborn must follow the linear path forward until they reach a ladder leading to Mistwatch Lower Balcony. With the Mistwatch Key, players can bypass the Master Lock and proceed without issue.

Heading west, the Dragonborn will then need to open the door to the Mistwatch West Tower and proceed inside. Then, they can travel up the stairs to the left and follow the corridor to find a door leading to the Mistwatch Higher Balcony.

Opening the door and continuing east, a door leading to the Mistwatch East Tower can be seen and then entered; inside, a Bandit Leader will approach the Dragonborn and question them on what they are doing.

The Bandit Leader is then revealed to be Fjola, but she has no interest in returning to Christer's side. Players will then be given the option to either convince Christer to leave or kill Fjola for not agreeing to go return to him.

How To Complete The Forgetting About Fjola Side Quest

Speaking to Fjola the Bandit Leader in Skyrim

The "Forgetting About Fjola" quest can end in several different ways, depending on what the player chooses. Choosing to make Christer leave leads to what is arguably the better ending, but since neither outcome affects Skyrim's overall story, players are free to choose whichever option they prefer without suffering any major consequences.

Getting Rid Of Christer

If players select the "What am I supposed to tell Christer" option and then select "I'll try getting him to leave," Fjola will give the Dragonborn her Wedding Band. The Wedding Band can then be presented to Christer, and the player can choose to either tell him that Fjola is dead or that they simply found the Wedding Band during the investigation.

If Christer learns that Fjola is dead, he will give the Dragonborn the Wedding Band; if the Dragonborn tells him that they were unable to find Fjola, he will reward them with some Gold before leaving to continue his search. Returning to Fjola after either of these outcomes, she will thank the Dragonborn for their help and state that she owes them a debt.

Killing Fjola

If players choose to kill Fjola, they can loot her body to acquire her Wedding Band. Players will then be given three dialogue options when they next speak to Christer; choosing either of the first two will cause him to leave, but selecting the third "I had to kill her. She attacked me" option will cause him to become hostile and attack.

No matter what outcome players decide to pursue, they will always be able to obtain the Wedding Band; however, Christer will not reward the Dragonborn with Gold if he learns that Fjola is dead.
