Players can become Thane of the many holds of Skyrim. Attaining the title of Thane gives the Dragonborn certain benefits in that area. Fans must become friendly with the local Jarl and prove their usefulness to the citizens to do so. Morthal is a dreary village in the Hjaalmarch marshes of Skyrim.
Players will find this village in disarray as the citizens dislike Jarl Idgrod Ravencrone and the wizard she's allowed to take residence in Morthal. If players have sided with the Stormcloaks and advanced the civil war storyline far enough, Sorli the Builder will be Jarl instead. Regardless the method to become Thane will be the same. Follow this walkthrough to attain the title of Thane in Morthal.
Complete Laid to Rest
Speak to Jarl Idgrod to learn that a home in the village has been destroyed in a fire. This will begin the Laid to Rest quest. Investigate the burnt-down house to find Helgi's ghost. She will play hide and seek with the Dragonborn. Find her at night next to the coffin on the hill above the house. Fight the vampire there to find out that the fire may be Alva's doing. Sneak into Alva's house and find the journal in her coffin. If Hroggar is there he will be hostile. Use a potion and sneak around him or wait until daylight to avoid this. Show the journal to the Jarl to reveal that Alva is a vampire and is planning to take the town.
The Jarl will assemble a group of townsfolk to storm the nearby vampire lair and slay the master vampire Movarth. He will be joined by vampire and vampire thrall enemies. This group can be difficult for low-level players to deal with, but the enemies will not follow the Dragonborn back to the entrance of the cave. Use this to retreat and heal if necessary. Defeat Movarth and Helgi will appear at the entrance to thank the Dragonborn. Return to the Jarl and ask for the title of Thane. She will task the player with aiding the villagers.
Assist Three Citizens
Players need to help three citizens to become Thane. Doing so will reward the player with the Blade of Hjaalmarch, the companion Valdimar, and the ability to purchase land in the area. It's best to assist citizens as soon as possible before they get killed by random vampire attacks caused by the Dawnguard expansion.
