While exploring the vast world of The Elder Scrolls 5: Skyrim, players are sure to stumble upon a variety of unique items to aid them on their adventure. Most of what players acquire during the main story can help a great deal, but some of the best weapons and tools in the game are hidden elsewhere.
The Notched Pickaxe is arguably one of the strangest items players can acquire during their playthrough, and it's also one of the most well-hidden collectibles in all of Skyrim. It's the most interesting pickaxe available in the game, but those hoping to acquire it will first need to gain access to the Throat of the World.
How To Get To The Throat Of The World
Before players can acquire the Notched Pickaxe, they must first progress the main story and begin The Throat of the World main quest. During this quest, they will unlock the power needed to access the Throat of the World, the area in which the Notched Pickaxe can be found.
If players have already completed The Throat of the World quest and want to return to Paarthurnax's domain, the fastest way to get back there is to fast-travel; those who have yet to progress this far in the story, however, will need to travel to High Hrothgar first. This can be done by leaving Whiterun and heading east and then south around the mountain. Eventually, players will reach a small village named Ivarstead; the path leading to High Hrothgar can be found by crossing the bridge leading northwest.
Upon reaching High Hrothgar for the first time, the Dragonborn can enter inside to speak to the Greybeards to complete The Way of the Voice. They will then need to progress the story until they unlock the Clear Skies Shout. This Shout, when used next to the blizzard in the High Hrothgar Courtyard, will calm the storm on the mountain, allowing the Dragonborn access to the Throat of the World.
Notched Pickaxe Location
Upon reaching the Throat of the World, players should turn their attention to the small mountain to their left. It may not look climbable at first, but reaching the top is surprisingly easy if players make regular use of the jump button.
At the top, players will notice a large Malachite Ore Vein; turning west and proceeding toward the large triangular rock higher up, they will encounter an Ebony Ore Vein, next to which the Notched Pickaxe can be seen and acquired.
Unlike other pickaxes, the Notched Pickaxe deals 5 shock damage when used as a weapon. It can also be used to increase the wielder's Smithing abilities, making it a must-have for those who wish to pursue the Smithing skill.
The Elder Scrolls 5: Skyrim is available for PS3, PS4, PS5, Xbox 360, Xbox One, Xbox Series X/S, PC, and Nintendo Switch.
