Elder Scrolls 5: Skyrim has no shortage of melee, magic, and ranged weapons to choose from that can help the Dragonborn survive onslaughts from a range of enemies, from lowly Skeevers all the way up to the mighty dragons in the game. With the latter being the focal point of the game's story, however, there are some weapons out there that players can acquire that will be far more effective against these mythological beasts than others.

As players progress through the main story of Skyrim, there will come an opportunity for them to find and equip a blade, known as Dragonbane, that is specifically designed to cause additional damage to dragons, which will be crucial in acquiring rare items like Dragon Bones and Dragon Scales, as well as unlocking any new Shouts that are found on the Dragonborn's travels. For those wanting to know how to get Dragonbane in Skyrim, this guide will show you where it can be found.

Where to Find Dragonbane in Skyrim

The Dragonbane sword on a table in Skyrim

The Dragonbane sword can be found while players are venturing through the main story of Skyrim, but it can easily be missed, as it is not a component of story progression. To find it, players will need to enter the Sky Haven Temple as part of the Alduin's Wall main quest.

As players enter the temple, there will be an open room on the left-hand side that contains a chest on the left and a table in the middle. This room has no door, so it's a simple matter of walking through the opening. On the left, players can find a complete set of Blades Armor in the chest, and the Dragonbane sword can be acquired from the table.

If you have reached the stairs on the left side of the room, then you have ventured too far.

How To Get To Sky Haven Temple in Skyrim

As part of the Alduin's Wall quest, players will first need to make their way to the Sky Haven Temple. While players are more or less directed on where to go to find this location, getting to it comes with its challenges. To start with, you will need to make your way to Karthspire, which is heavily guarded by a camp of Forsworn, so it would be best to stock up on any healing resources and ensure you've got your best weapons on hand. Thankfully, you'll have the support of Delphine and Esbern, so you won't need to take on the entire camp alone.

Once the Forsworn are dealt with, players will need to venture into the cave, where some additional Forsworn can be found. Once they have been defeated, continue along the path provided until you reach the room with the floor switches that trigger fire. On the left side of the room, just by the exit, is a chain you will need to pull to lower the bridge.

After players pass the bridge, they will need to go up the stairs on the right to the three pillar puzzle that is blocking the passage to the temple. Esbern will explain what each symbol means, with the Dragonborn symbol being respresented by the two rounded sides and the arrow-like shape on the bottom. Turn all three pillars until they show the Dragonborn symbol, and the bridge will lower.

Once players reach the entry to the Sky Haven Temple, Esbern will explain that a blood sacrifice is needed to open it, which you can do by standing in the middle of the rune on the floor and pressing the interact button. This will open the temple, from which players can proceed to Alduin's Wall and the room where the Dragonbane sword is located.

Dragonbane Sword Stats in Skyrim

The Dragonbane sword in Skyrim

The Dragonbane is an Akaviri Katana, which is a type of blade that is synonymous with the Blades guild that were once prevalent in the war against dragons. The appeal of the sword is in the additional damage it does to dragons, the degree of which is determined by the level that the player is at when they acquire it. To get the maximum damage value, players can return once they reach level 46, but it is still well and truly worthwhile acquiring in the early stages of the game. The Dragonbane base stats are as follows;

Stat

Value

Damage

15

Weight

10

Value

789

Damage Bonus One

20 points to dragons.

Damage Bonus Two

10 points of shock damage to other enemies.

While the appeal of the Dragonbane is the additional damage to dragons, it still comes with some benefits to non-dragon enemies, providing a bonus in shock damage to other adversary types. All of these stats can be improved with a quicksilver ingot and by upgrading your smithing perks until you have the Arcane Smith ability.

The Dragonbane sword unfortunately cannot be disenchanted, meaning you can't transfer the dragon damage ability from this blade to another weapon.
