A Skyrim player booted up the game for the first time in a year only to discover an adorable surprise waiting for them. While it's not uncommon for Skyrim players to come back to the game with little memory of what their character was doing when they last played, this particular surprise involved a forgotten mod.

Skyrim is arguably one of the most modded games around, with the game having mods for everything from upgrading textures to making it more like a Pokemon game than Skyrim. While Skyrim is perfectly enjoyable without a single mod, given that it's now 14 years old, plenty of gamers use them, with popular mod hub NexusMods displaying over 100,000 mods for the Special Edition of Skyrim alone.

Maxwell the Cat Welcomes Player Home to Skyrim

skyrim-whiterun-breezehome

On Reddit, user Havry97 shared a post explaining that they just begun a new run in Skyrim after not having touched the game in a year. Though it was a new run, their mods were still enabled, and they had forgotten about one in particular that adds Maxwell the Cat to the game. A gameplay clip shows the player exploring Jorrvaskr in Whiterun when a cheerful tune starts faintly playing in the background. As the player approaches the sound, they walk into a room with a Stone of Barenziah, but the stone has been replaced by a miniature Maxwell that spins in place.

Other Skyrim fans have been amused to see the Maxwell mod, and many wanted to get it for themselves. The OP shared that they used Maxwell The Cat - Stone of Barenziah Replacer, which can be found on NexusMods. Other players pointed out that as silly as the mod is, it could even serve a purpose, as the tune playing helps players to discover that there's a stone nearby and seek it out. Given that the stones are fairly small and that players need to collect 24 of them in order to complete the No Stone Unturned quest and rebuild the Crown of Barenziah, Maxwell could actually be quite helpful. To make it even better, with this mod, the Crown of Barenziah that's placed on display in the Thieves Guild also gets its own spinning Maxwell on top.

Maxwell the Cat and Spinning Cat Skyrim Mods

Maxwell the Cat, outside of this Skyrim mod, was a meme that took off in 2022. Like most memes, it's undergone some evolution over time, but it started out as a photo of a tuxedo cat that was converted into a Garry's Mod 3D model. From there, it gained popularity, became a carryable item in the game, and eventually a clip was produced of the model spinning in a circle, to which another person overlaid the song on top. At that point, Maxwell the Cat reached peak virality, with the Skyrim mod being uploaded about a year later.

While this particular mod is quite cute and amusing, it's far from the only silly cat mod to be added to the game. In fact, another modder also added Maxwell the Cat to Skyrim as an item that players can find and carry with them. Maxwell isn't even the only spinning cat meme to be featured in a Skyrim mod, though, as the OIIA OIIA spinning cat has its own mod that not only puts it in the game, but turns it into a full-fledged follower for the player. However, it might be best to not install the two together if the goal is to find the Stones of Barenziah, as the OIIA OIIA cat plays its song wherever it goes, and it would probably drown out Maxwell.
