Summary

  • The Hero of Kvatch's relevance is increasing, with rumors of an Oblivion remaster regularly appearing online.
  • Intriguingly, Skyrim hints at a dark turn for the Hero of Kvatch from Oblivion, something that is one worth looking into.
  • The Hero of Kvatch becomes Sheogorath in the Shivering Isles expansion, leading to interesting interactions in Skyrim.

Skyrim managed to drop some hints that could point towards a surprisingly dark turn for Oblivion's protagonist, the Hero of Kvatch. Of course, the player won't be spending much time with the Hero of Kvatch, since Skyrim isn't their story to tell. However, the player can glean just enough details about them in order to put some pieces together. While it's not 100% confirmed what happened to the Hero of Kvatch after Oblivion, Skyrim does offer a fair amount of hints. If these hints are true, then Oblivion's hero has a role unlike any other Elder Scrolls protagonist.

With a rumored remaster of Oblivion being discussed, the Hero of Kvatch feels more relevant than they have been in years. Much like Skyrim's Last Dragonborn, the Hero of Kvatch's story starts at their lowest point, having recently been imprisoned. However, after encountering Emperor Uriel Septim in an attempt to evade assassins, they end up wrapped in a quest that puts the fate of Cyrodil in their hands. In typical Elder Scrolls fashion, the Hero of Kvatch can be whoever the player desires in terms of race, class, and skills. The Hero of Kvatch would eventually become the Champion of Cyrodil as a whole.

The Hero of Kvatch May Have Made Skyrim's Most Surprising Cameo

The Hero of Kvatch Becomes Sheogorath in an Expansion

After fighting many powerful enemies in Oblivion, the Hero of Kvatch could have faded into history after their journey's end. However, fate took them down a different path. In the Shivering Isles expansion for Oblivion, the Hero travels to the titular location, which happens to be the domain of Sheogorath, the Daedric Prince of Madness. In the expansion, the Hero of Kvatch is able to defeat the God of Order Jyggalag, but because Jyggalag and Sheogorath are one and the same, the Prince of Madness dies as well. After these events, the Hero of Kvatch ends up taking up Sheogorath's throne, becoming his successor.

Sheogorath Returns For a Quest in Skyrim

Sheogorath returns in one of the Daedric quests of Skyrim, The Mind of Madness. In this quest, Sheogorath acts like the same wacky character that charmed fans in his first appearance. However, he makes a few comments about the events of Oblivion that may raise a few eyebrows. While it's possible that the role of Sheogorath could have been passed over once more, especially since Oblivion players already saw it happen once, there is one character that certainly saw the events of Oblivion firsthand. This interaction is a solid reason to believe that Oblivion's Hero of Kvatch is the Sheogorath seen in Skyrim.

Skyrim's Sheogorath always appears as a male Breton, which could be taken as possible evidence against the theory that he is the Hero of Kvatch unless he shapeshifted into a new form.

Sheogorath Meeting the Last Dragonborn Could Be a Meeting of Elder Scrolls Heroes

If Oblivion's Hero of Kvatch is truly the Sheogorath encountered in Skyrim, then it marks a momentous occasion for the series. The Last Dragonborn's encounter with Sheogorath would be the first time in the series where two player characters properly meet and interact. Of course, if this Sheogorath is the Hero of Kvatch, his time as a protagonist has passed, with him having properly settled into his new role. That doesn't make the occasion any less of an event, though. If Skyrim's Sheogorath is the Hero of Kvatch, then he and the Last Dragonborn made Elder Scrolls history.

While it has never been explicitly confirmed whether the Hero of Kvatch is Skyrim's Sheogorath, it remains one of the game's more intriguing mysteries. There is enough reason to believe that it could be the case, and it presents an exciting possibility. What is certain is that the Hero of Kvatch does indisputably earn Sheogorath's throne by the end of the Shivering Isles questline. Sheogorath's Daedric quest in Skyrim could very well have been the Hero of Kvatch making a cameo appearance.
