During the 2024 Triple-I Initiative Showcase, the Seattle-based studio Mega Crit announced Slay the Spire 2, the long-awaited follow-up to the hit roguelike deck builder that came out in 2019. The teaser trailer for the game that was shown at this event wasn't that informative, since it was just a brief animated short that revealed only a few new characters. Surprisingly, there was no hint of gameplay in the trailer, either. Although Mega Crit did share some images of Slay the Spire 2's gameplay in a press release at the time, the company remained mostly tight-lipped about its next big title.

Mega Crit showed off Slay the Spire 2 again during The Game Awards 2024, this time with some proper gameplay footage. The company gave players their first look at the deck-building combat in the upcoming sequel, and it unveiled some of the strange new enemies that they would encounter. As revealed in the trailers for the game, Mega Crit plans to launch Slay the Spire 2 in 2025 exclusively on Windows PCs. The developer stated that, in order to receive more feedback directly from players, it intends to launch the game straight into Steam’s early access program. Mega Crit did not, however, provide a specific release window for Slay the Spire 2.

Slay the Spire 2 Will Come Out Sometime in 2025

In order to ease any concerns about a potential delay, the developers at Mega Crit recently reaffirmed their plans to get Slay the Spire 2 into the hands of players within the next 12 months. In a recent news post on the Steam page for the game, Mega Crit said that it is "still on track to release" sometime in 2025, but it admitted that it couldn't narrow down an exact date or month at the moment. The developers added that, because they had just wrapped up their holiday break, they didn't have too much news to share about the game besides this.

Like Its Predecessor, Slay the Spire 2 May Be Released in the Second Half of The Year

Given the lack of available information, it's hard to accurately predict the specific date that Slay the Spire 2 will be released, but looking at the past can give an idea of what to expect regarding this matter. Mega Crit's previous game, Slay the Spire, went through an early access release cycle, much like its sequel. The original Slay the Spire was initially launched through Steam's early access program in November 2017, and it received a 1.0 version approximately one year later. Taking this into consideration, the game's successor will likely be in development for a similar period of time, as well.

If Slay the Spire 2 does follow the release cadence of its predecessor, then it may be launched in the second half of 2025. However, Mega Crit may surprise its fans by launching the game during the summer. The calendar for 2025 hasn't been filled out just yet, but at the time of writing, the summer seems pretty light on game releases. Therefore, June, July, or August may be a good time to launch a game like Slay the Spire 2, especially since the fall 2025 release window currently seems a bit risky.

Slay the Spire 2's Early Access Launch Could Be Delayed to 2026 Due to GTA 6

There is one potential wild card that could disrupt Slay the Spire 2's planned release window, and that's Grand Theft Auto 6. Rockstar Games' GTA 6 is likely to be a generation-defining open-world game that is supposed to be hitting store shelves this fall, but it still doesn't have an exact release date. If Slay the Spire 2's launch window coincides with Grand Theft Auto 6's, then Mega Crit may have no choice but to push the game's early access launch into 2026 in order to prevent it from being overshadowed. Of course, the chances of this happening are quite slim, so, unless some unexpected circumstances occur, it's best to assume that Slay the Spire 2 will be released in 2025 for the time being.
