Summary

  • Smite 2 won't be available on the Nintendo Switch due to concerns about the console's hardware capabilities.
  • The developers are open to bringing Smite 2 to other platforms if the Nintendo Switch gets a more powerful successor.
  • The original Smite game is still available to play on the Nintendo Switch, but the upcoming sequel won't be.

One of the developers of Smite 2 has explained why there are no plans to bring the game to the Nintendo Switch console. The original Smite is a third-person MOBA that gives players the chance to play as a god from a wide variety of mythological pantheons. Smite 2's reveal trailer showed that it would be a huge upgrade compared to the first game, boasting upgraded visuals thanks to the game's upgrade to Unreal Engine 5.

Smite 2's reveal trailer also confirmed the platforms it would be launching on, which includes PC, PS5, Xbox Series X/S, and even the Steam Deck. Smite 2 also confirmed it would have cross-play functionality, though according to the developers, any cross progression is dependent on partner approval. One system that is omitted from Smite 2's release is the Nintendo Switch, which may seem odd considering its predecessor was released on the console. The executive producer of Smite, Alex Cantatore, confirms that the Switch is being skipped over due to its hardware.

In an interview with TechRadar, Cantatore says that the team behind Smite 2 was uncertain that the Nintendo Switch would have the necessary power to handle the game, stating that the console's current hardware wouldn't be able to deliver the intended experience they were aiming for. "We're concerned that currently, with the power level of Switch and the minimum specs that we're targeting," says Cantatore. "We just aren't sure that we'd be able to develop or deliver a really good experience to people playing on Switch currently."

While the Smite sequel won't be coming to the current iteration of the Nintendo Switch, Cantatore adds that the developers are "keeping an open mind" about bringing Smite 2 to other platforms. He states that if the Nintendo Switch got a more powerful successor, they would re-evaluate Smite 2's chances of coming to such a console, though asserts he has no knowledge if such a system is in the works at Nintendo. "Smite’s been everywhere we can possibly get it to run well, and I would expect that to continue with Smite 2," Cantatore adds. "We're just not sure we'd be able to get it running well on Switch 1, unfortunately."

We're concerned that currently, with the power level of Switch and the minimum specs that we're targeting, we just aren't sure that we'd be able to develop or deliver a really good experience to people playing on Switch currently.

There have been plenty of rumors of Nintendo developing a Switch 2, with details such as possible games, features, and even its price point being circulated online. Some developers and studios have also reportedly gotten their hands on development kits for the new system. However, the Switch successor is currently only a rumor, so any information about it should be taken with a grain of salt until Nintendo says otherwise. In the meantime, Smite players on Nintendo Switch will only be able to play the original game and not its upcoming sequel.
