The Crunchyroll awards for this year, 2025, came with some controversy, which isn’t exactly uncommon for this kind of event. The controversy has to do with the anime chosen as Anime of the Year, perhaps the most prestigious award at this event. The anime chosen was Solo Leveling.

Solo Leveling definitely took the anime community by storm with how successful the show was. Not only did this anime win Anime of the Year, but it was also nominated and won many other categories. Solo Leveling was also awarded Best New series, Best Action, Best Main Character, Best Score, Best Ending Sequence, Best Voice Artist Performance (Brazilian Portuguese), Best Voice Artist Performance (Castilian Spanish), and Best Voice Artist Performance (English). This is a lot for one anime, the most this year, and by far. It’s unsurprising to see why many anime fans are upset at this sweep. Numerous fans believe that the Anime of the Year should've gone to none other than Frieren.

While Solo Leveling won Anime of the Year, many believe the anime that actually deserved the win is Frieren: Beyond Journey’s End.
Frieren: Beyond Journey’s End has become an iconic anime within the community, and Frieren, the main character has quickly become a fan favorite. The story has moved many people with its melancholic themes. The action and animation also can’t be understated, and both are great in their own regard.

While Frieren didn’t win Anime of the Year, it did win in some other categories, notably Best Background Art, Best Drama, and Best Supporting Character. As such, it isn’t a total loss for the series either, unlike some other great anime.
