This article contains spoilers from the Solo Leveling series.

One of the defining qualities of Solo Leveling's protagonist, Sung Jinwoo, is that he can always level up and get stronger. In essence, there is no limit to how strong Jinwoo can get, and that is one of his most defining traits. Jinwoo spent the vast majority of the Solo Leveling series fighting enemies stronger than him and surpassing them all. In the end, hardly anyone could stand in his way.

However, Solo Leveling Ragnarok, the sequel to the main story, has changed things quite a bit for him. Sung Jinwoo is no longer the only Hunter who can level up. His son, Sung Suho, can also level up, but what's surprising is that he is not one to limit this power to himself. Suho has made it so that others around him can level up as well, and for Jinwoo, that no longer makes him unique. Finally, after all these years, Jinwoo has lost a part of what makes him truly special.

Sung Jinwoo Is Not The Only Hunter That Can Level Up Anymore

Solo Leveling Doesn't Have A Dominant Presence In Japan

Solo Leveling Ragnarok isn't exactly an official sequel to the manhwa. While most fans considered it to be the only sequel that the series would ever receive, this idea was squashed by the author himself.

Ragnarok was a spin-off created for fanservice. I was curious to see how another author would write Solo Leveling. This story is part of the Solo Leveling universe, but it isn’t a direct continuation of the main plot. It’s more like one of many possible scenarios—similar to Marvel’s parallel universes. And of course, I’m also considering the possibility of writing a sequel myself. — Chugong

According to Chugong, Solo Leveling Ragnarok is a series set in a parallel universe. This means that his own story has no actual sequel, and that is what sets Ragnarok apart at the moment. Still, it is the only sequel series available at the moment, and in it, Jinwoo has a son, named Sung Suho. Suho is incredibly powerful and just like his father, he can level up as well. However, he doesn't limit this ability to himself.

Sung Suho's Shadow Creation Allows Other Hunters To Level Up

By using a clever loophole, he can allow others to level up as well, which basically takes away from Jinwoo what truly makes him special in the story. By using his clever Shadow Creation ability, Suho can essentially make weapons out of Shadows and then distribute them among his friends. These weapons can directly level up, which means all those around him can also get stronger without actually being able to level up themselves.

I am the record of your struggles, the evidence of your resistance, and the reward of your sufferings. I am death, I am eternal rest, I am terror. - Ashborn to Sung Jinwoo, Solo Leveling Manhwa

In other words, all those fighting alongside Suho can now officially level up in Solo Leveling, and that is absolutely huge. Fans got to see this major change in chapter 62 of the Solo Leveling Ragnarok manhwa, and it goes without saying that this change was welcomed by the fans who are tired of seeing the sidecast being reduced to just observers on the side.

Solo Leveling Has Been Changed For The Better In Ragnarok

Solo Leveling Has Been Changed For The Better In Ragnarok

It is understandable why some fans might not like this new change in Solo Leveling as it makes Jinwoo less special in a way. However, what Jinwoo can do and what all the others can do with their weapons is completely different. Jinwoo is still a God in the world of Solo Leveling and no one can come close to him in terms of power, not even his son, Suho.

In that sense, nothing has truly been taken away from Jinwoo. The only thing this new ability does is serve as a means for all the other Hunters to level up as well so they can further their own character arcs in interesting ways without being reduced to observers on the sidelines.

Fans have come to absolutely love this decision by Daul, and it adds a lot of depth to a cast of characters that are in desperate need of it. Solo Leveling faces quite a lot of criticism for not being able to flesh out its side characters properly, but with this change, that is now possible.

It might be the end of an era for Jinwoo, given that he is not the only one who can now get progressively stronger with each battle, but that doesn't matter and it should not hold any weight in the grand scheme of things, as this change is a net positive for the Solo Leveling series and something that most fans seem to enjoy.

Solo Leveling has two seasons out right now, one with 12 episodes, and the other with 13, for a combined episode count of 25 episodes available to watch right now. The series can be streamed on Crunchyroll for fans to enjoy while awaiting any more news concerning the third season. There have been no major announcements about a third season so far. Fans can get more Solo Leveling content via the Manhwa.
