Simply put, the architect of the System, also called Kandiaru, was searching for a vessel for the Shadow Monarch, Ashborn to reincarnate into. Kandiaru had struck a deal with him to help him find the vessel, and to that end, he created the System. Hardly anyone was considered to be a perfect fit for the Vessel, until Sung Jinwoo. The requirements needed someone to have the right physique, and at the same time, the right mentality. Although Kandiaru failed to find anyone for long, Jinwoo was the perfect vessel that they needed and that's precisely why he was chosen.

In fact, in Season 2 of Solo Leveling, Jinwoo wonders more often about the System, and Season 3 will most certainly see him return to the Cartenon Temple after acquiring the right to return by hitting Level 100.
