Sonic Frontiers is a very different experience than what is expected from a traditional Sonic title. Exploration has just as much focus as platforming in Frontiers and with that some choices in how players wish to play the game must be made. When starting a new game in Sonic Frontiers, players will be presented with the option of two play styles.

Both options have their merits and seriously change how Sonic handles in the open-world sections. They may benefit different types of players, Sonic Frontiers has many options to fine-tune the experience to be as accessible as possible for players. So which choice is best will depend on how each player prefers to play the game.

Other Options

In addition to the two preset play styles, there are a variety of tweaks that can be made to other aspects of the gameplay regardless of which platform the game is played on. These options can be found within the menu and can be adjusted individually according to the player's preferences and play style. The following options can be adjusted to change how Sonic controls, in addition to the initial presets.

These sliders can be moved at any stage in the game in the game settings menu within options. Back to the preset options presented, when starting a new game, each has differences that will change how Sonic handles. Below is a look at both options and what picking one or the other does to change gameplay.

Action Mode

This option when selected will pull the camera back and slow down the action on screen. Picking this option might be a good choice for younger players who find the speedier sections of Sonic Frontiers challenging. It may also benefit players who have accessibility needs or for those who prefer more precise platforming.

High-Speed Mode

Choosing high speed as the preferred play style will launch Sonic Frontiers using a more traditional Sonic feeling experience. This mode zooms the camera closer to Sonic to make the game feel a lot more fast-paced than selecting the action option. Players who choose this mode should be well-versed in the Sonic franchise's fast-paced action and all his moves and abilities. The downside of selecting High Speed is that players sacrifice the precision found with the Action play style.

So, that was a look at the two preset play styles offered to players beginning Sonic Frontiers. The best way to decide which one suits best is to test them out. Playing with High Speed may be great for traversing the open world, however, Action mode certainly can come in handy at some trickier platforming sections. Personal preference and skill level will play a part when changing the other options also, and taking a trial and error approach to see what suits best is recommended.

Try out both play-styles to find out which one works best. After getting a feel for each, players will find one of the two on offer preferable.

Sonic Frontiers is out now for PS4, PS5, Xbox One, Xbox Series, Nintendo Switch, and PC.
