Sega recently shared some details about pre-race character interactions in Sonic Racing: CrossWorlds, including those between characters that have rarely met in previous games. A new Sonic kart racer is zooming onto all major platforms on September 25, this time featuring Sonic and his many different friends and enemies warping between dimensions using ring-like portals during races. Fans have been getting to see more of Sonic Racing: CrossWorlds in action, including looks at the many different characters that will be available at launch.
The Sonic the Hedgehog franchise has no shortage of iconic characters, and Sonic Racing: CrossWorlds promises to have a massive roster to accommodate them. As one would expect from a series that has lasted as long as Sonic has, many of these characters have a personal history with each other, with Sonic himself maintaining rivalries with the likes of Dr. Eggman, Shadow the Hedgehog, and various other villains and anti-heroes. Other characters haven't interacted much at all, and Sonic Racing: CrossWorlds will reflect this in its pre-race dialogue.
Mario Kart World and Sonic Racing: CrossWorlds Aren't Rivals, But Two Sides of the Same Coin
Even though Mario Kart World and Sonic Racing: CrossWorlds are releasing close together, the two are better standing side by side than as rivals.
In a recent post on the official Sonic Racing: CrossWorlds Twitter account, Sega revealed that there are over 500 types of character exchanges in the game and over 1,000 voice lines. This means that there will be a variety of pre-race conversations, including between characters who have never interacted before in the history of the Sonic series. An example of this is shown between Zazz of the Deadly Six and Jet the Hawk, which sees the former underestimate the latter ahead of their showdown on the racetrack.
Sonic Racing: CrossWorlds Will Have Some Characters Interact for the First Time
Additionally, Sonic Racing: CrossWorlds will have guest characters outside of the Sonic series as DLC, with the first round being confirmed at Summer Game Fest 2025 earlier this month. Sonic and company will get to tear through tracks alongside Hatsune Miku, Ichiban Kasuga from the Yakuza franchise, and Joker of Persona 5 fame. A later update will bring Steve, Alex, and the Creeper from Minecraft into the fray.
This makes the pre-race dialogue in Sonic Racing: CrossWorld all the more interesting, as it might have these guests interact with the main cast on a level that few games often bother with. Even with just the primary Sonic cast, there are plenty of characters who haven’t officially shared the screen in past games, so hardcore fans will have extra incentive to pair off everyone and see how their dialogues play out in Sonic Racing: CrossWorlds when it finally launches in September.
