Sonic the Hedgehog has a long history with racing games. From the Sonic Drift games of the 90s to the innovative Sonic & All-Stars Racing Transformed, Sonic has taken part in many races over the years. While the reception to Team Sonic Racing, the latest home console installment, was somewhat mixed, Sega is looking to rebound in a big way with Sonic Racing: CrossWorlds. Following an initial teaser at The Game Awards 2024, fans recently received a look at gameplay.
2025 Could Be the Year of the Kart Racer
PlayStation's newest State of Play showcase included an upcoming kart racer that could contribute to 2025 being a huge year for the genre.
During the February 12 State of Play, a new Sonic Racing: CrossWorlds trailer was unveiled. This trailer gave fans an idea of what to expect from the game, including the lineup of racers. Series stalwarts like Sonic, Dr. Eggman, Knuckles, Tails, Shadow, and Amy were visible behind the wheel. In addition, characters like Silver, Omega, Jet the Hawk, Cream the Rabbit, Vector, Charmy, Big the Cat, and more made appearances. Even Sage from Sonic Frontiers was seen in the trailer. According to the developer, Sonic Racing: CrossWorlds will feature the largest roster of racers ever in the series.
Sonic Racing: CrossWorlds PS5 Network Test Date

Fortunately, some fans will have an opportunity to check out these characters soon as part of a network test. According to a PlayStation Blog post, PS5 players can test some of Sonic Racing: CrossWorlds’ features starting February 21. With a start date later this month, fans will not have long to wait to see what the new Sonic Racing game has to offer. The blog post did not mention whether any other platforms would receive similar network tests.
In addition to revealing racers and a network test, the developer unveiled some of the unique features coming to the game. Specifically, the game will include Travel Rings, allowing the player in the lead to choose to warp the race to a new world. Thanks to this feature, Sonic Team looks to keep races fresh and exciting. Furthermore, the trailer revealed that Sonic Racing: CrossWorlds is taking inspiration from past games, with the transformation abilities from Sonic & All-Stars Racing Transformed making a comeback. The Extreme Gear is also a part of the proceedings, letting players race on hoverboards, like in the Sonic Riders games. Sonic Racing: CrossWorlds is also bringing new customizations options, along with Gadgets to the series.
With Sonic Racing: CrossWorlds looking to be one of the biggest installments in the Sonic Racing series, it looks like fans have a lot to look forward to in the months ahead. With a network test coming later this month, it will be interesting to see when a release date is announced for PS5, PS4, Xbox Series X/S, Xbox One, Nintendo Switch, and PC.
