- The title was originally slated for a May 8 release, but the development team says that more time is needed.
- Over 1.4 million players have pre-registered for Sonic Rumble, which promises no pay-to-win mechanics.
Sonic Rumble has hit a speedbump and is being delayed from its previously planned May 8 release date. Angry Birds developer Rovio Entertainment was acquired by Sega in 2023, and its first Sonic-based project is a multiplayer battle royale in the spirit of Fall Guys. Sonic Rumble features toy versions of Sonic and his colorful castmates as they race against each other through perilous obstacle courses and minigames filled with everything one would expect from a Sonic the Hedgehog title, such as rings, loop-de-loops, and robotic Badnik enemies to smash along the way.
Sonic Rumble was initially announced in May 2024, with a closed beta test period taking place later that month. Sega initially planned to launch the game sometime between late 2024 and early 2025, but Sonic Rumble would eventually be delayed until the second quarter of 2025. Earlier this month, Sega released a new Sonic Rumble trailer that seemingly confirmed that the game would launch on May 8, but now this won’t be the case after all.
Sonic Rumble Hands-On Preview
Sonic Rumble is an upcoming platforming-based battle royale game that melds the genre with Sonic's iconic features in a satisfying gameplay loop.
In a post on the official Sonic Rumble webpage, the developers announced that the game is being delayed again due to new features the team wishes to add as part of a new Sonic Rumble update. This includes a new Rumble Ranking that lets players compete within a league based on their scores, a Crews feature that will allow players to create groups with in-game friends, and special Skills that can be equipped to characters for added gameplay and depth.
Sonic Rumble is Delayed Again
Because these new features will take time to implement, Sega and Rovio Entertainment have decided to postpone the full release of Sonic Rumble. The team doesn’t have a new release date confirmed yet, but it took the time to thank players who took an interest in Sonic Rumble from the beginning and acknowledge that this delay may be disappointing to those looking forward to the game. Sega will also host a special Discord Q&A session to address the delay further and answer questions fans might have about Sonic Rumble’s new features.
Ever since its initial announcement, Sonic Rumble has been gathering a significant following. Over 1.4 million players have pre-registered for the game, and the goodwill for Sonic Rumble only grew when it was announced that there would be none of the gacha or pay-to-win mechanics that have soured gamers on other free-to-play multiplayer titles in the past. These fans have been waiting anxiously for Sonic Rumble’s full global release, and now it looks like they will have to wait a while longer. No new release date has been confirmed yet, so players will have to stay tuned for any future announcements.
