Sonic Rumble has been pushed back to spring 2025. The delay was announced alongside a preview of the next Sonic Rumble update, which promises to make some big changes, like adding two new modes.
Originally announced in early May 2024, Sonic Rumble is a multiplayer party game with battle royale-style challenges for 32 players. It's been in development at Rovio since around the time Sega completed its 2023 acquisition of the Angry Birds maker. The game was soft-launched in Colombia and Peru in August 2024 and has since expanded to over 40 other countries. Rovio originally said that a full-fledged international release was planned for winter, so somewhere between December 2024 and March 2025.
6 Sonic Characters Who Ended Up Being Surprisingly Weak
Despite looking pretty fearsome at first glance, these Sonic characters honestly aren't all that strong.
With the originally stated launch window nearing its end, Rovio has now announced that Sonic Rumble has been pushed back. The new plan is for the PC and mobile versions of the game to debut globally in spring 2025. The news of the delay arrived along with a preview of the game's next update, identified by version number 1.2.0, which promises to introduce multiple new Sonic Rumble features.
Sonic Rumble Content Roadmap
One of the highlights of the upcoming patch is Quick Rumble, a straightforward mode that allows players to tackle the game in bite-sized increments. Instead of a more comprehensive battle royale experience, this mode will solely consist of single-round challenges, which should be particularly suitable for playing Sonic Rumble on the go. The 1.2.0 update will also introduce a competitive mode called Rival Rank. Climbing the ladder will be incentivized with a variety of extra rewards, the developer said, albeit without elaborating on the matter.
Sonic Rumble Might Have eSports Potential
The addition of Rival Rank suggests that Rovio might be interested in exploring the eSports potential of Sonic Rumble. The Finnish company has already experimented with eSports via the 2018 Angry Birds Champions—a competitive version of its hit game made in collaboration with skill-based gaming platform WorldWinner.
The Sonic Rumble 1.2.0 update will also include Crews, a new feature that lets players band into groups to tackle challenges together. Forming clans will be incentivized with yet-to-be-specified rewards. The final new feature confirmed for the upcoming patch is a repertoire of unique character skills, which Rovio describes as both useful and lore-friendly. While details on this addition remain scarce, the developer provided one example: using Amy’s Piko Piko Hammer to stun enemies. Rovio is expected to commit to a concrete global release date for its free-to-play game in the coming weeks. In the meantime, anyone eager to give Sonic Rumble a go can still pre-register for the game and earn some digital rewards for their interest.
