The game was revealed at the Summer Game Fest 2023 showcase hosted by Geoff Keighley, where a number of games were revealed or got a new look at their gameplay. This included the likes of Final Fantasy 7 Rebirth, the official gameplay reveal of Like a Dragon Gaiden, and more. Fans were very surprised to see a new Sonic game being announced at the show.Sonic Superstars is touted as being a new experience that combines the classic 2D gameplay of the Genesis titles with a new 3D aesthetic. It brings to mind the look and gameplay of the 2D segments of Classic Sonic in games like Sonic Generations or Sonic Forces. This game won't be limited to just Sonic however, as Tails, Knuckles, and Amy were confirmed to be playable with their own abilities in the game's announcement trailer. Sega was quick to release a statement that revealed a number of details about the game that weren't shown in the trailer, including its price.RELATED: Sonic Frontiers is Now Officially the Best-Selling 3D Sonic Game of All Time Sega revealed that the new Sonic the Hedgehog co-op game would be a full-priced release, starting at $59.99 USD, which might be a surprise to some. Some might have believed that initial trailer was for a free-to-play game or, because of past titles, would be priced lower like at $40 when Sonic Forces was first released in 2017. The game is set to release digitally and physically in Fall 2023, with more details regarding future packages and bonuses being given at a later date.

More details about the game were also revealed in Sega's statement, such as the new powers in the trailer are from the series' Chaos Emeralds. These will give Sonic and his friends the abilities to create clones, ride waterfalls, and more. Sonic and his friends will face Dr. Eggman, classic Sonic the Hedgehog villain Fang the Sniper, and a brand-new character created by Sonic's original character designer, Naoto Ohshima.

The first bonus is a Modern Amy skin available to anyone subscribed to the Sonic Superstars newsletter. It's likely these skins won't only apply to just Amy, but other characters as well. Amy being the first character to have a skin is likely tied to Sonic CD's 30th anniversary in 2023, which is the first game that she appeared in. Some fans have compared this game to Nintendo's New Super Mario Bros. Series, as it also went back to the franchise's roots and added 4-player co-op.

Sonic Superstars launches in Fall 2023 for PC, PS4, PS5, Switch, Xbox One, and Xbox Series X/S.
