Summary

  • Sonic Team is interested in remastering the Sonic Advance series but currently has no plans for it.
  • Takashi Iizuka sees potential for a re-release similar to Sonic Origins for Sonic Advance games.
  • The team is open to projects like Sonic Adventure 3 and Chao Garden, but there are no plans for them yet.

The team behind the Sonic the Hedgehog games would like to try remastering the Sonic Advance series. The trio of games was released from 2000-2004 and is considered a fan-favorite of the many 2D Sonic the Hedgehog titles out there. Now that it has been over 20 years since the release of the Sonic Advance series, gamers are hoping it may show up again at some point, either as a remastered collection of games or potentially in a new iteration for modern systems.

Sonic Team has been hard at work on Sonic X Shadow Generations, which is set for an October release. Because part of this game is a remaster of 2011's Sonic Generations, there has been hope from the franchise's fandom that Sega and Sonic Team may devote even more attention to titles from the Sonic series' long history. Although members of the team seem excited about that idea, it seems like a complex issue.

Sonic fans on Xbox are given another chance to grab a previously delisted Xbox 360 Sonic the Hedgehog title as part of a new bundle.

In an interview with VGC, Sonic franchise boss Takashi Iizuka stated that Team Sonic would "love to" remaster the Sonic Advance trilogy. Although members of the company may be interested, Team Sonic has not been given the opportunity to work on that kind of project. Iizuka's response indicated optimism regarding the Advance series, but he made it clear that there are no plans for any Sonic Advance projects, and the future is uncertain.

Sonic Team "Would Love To" Remaster Sonic Advance Trilogy

Iizuka noted that Katsuyuki Shigihara, a game designer for the Mario & Sonic series, recently served as the director of Sonic Origins, the compilation of Sonic 1-3 and Sonic CD, bringing up the precedent for remaster compilations in the franchise. Iizuka would be interested in giving the Sonic Advance series a similar type of re-release, but he isn't necessarily fixed to one format. Iizuka stated that he was open to "whatever circumstances may pop up." Sega could eventually get Sonic Team to work on a Sonic Advance trilogy remaster if it sees enough interest, but several factors may influence the process.

Takashi Iizuka displayed the same kind of attitude toward rumors about another Chao Garden mini-game and a long-awaited Sonic Adventure 3 release. Although there are no plans in the works for either type of game, the team would be just as happy to work on them. Iizuka noted that he equates work on a Chao Garden Game to working on a Sonic Adventure title, saying that "it's integrated into the whole Adventure series gameplay, so we can't just break it off and make it a thing." Although Team Sonic shows the drive for this kind of work, it may be some time before fans ever see another Sonic Advance or Sonic Adventure game.
