Sega has just revealed how long it will take most gamers to complete Sonic X Shadow Generations’ Shadow-centric bonus campaign. Players who pick up the upcoming Sonic X Shadow Generations won’t just be getting a remaster of 2011’s anniversary game, as there will also be a parallel side story centered around Shadow that sees the brooding hedgehog trapped in a mysterious void filled with enemies from his past.

In the build-up to Sonic X Shadow Generations’ release on October 25, Sonic Team has provided eager fans with details about what to expect from the new Shadow content, such as an assortment of new Doom Powers and an open-world hub similar to the one from Sonic Frontiers. Just like Sonic and his Classic counterpart in the main Sonic Generations, Shadow’s journey will see him return to classic levels from past titles like Sonic Adventure 2, the 2005 Shadow the Hedgehog spin-off, and even the infamous Sonic the Hedgehog (2006), as well as come face-to-face with familiar foes like Black Doom, Neo Metal Sonic, and Mephiles the Dark.

Sonic X Shadow Generations producer Shun Nakamura recently spoke with Famitsu during last week’s Tokyo Game Show (via Resetra) and revealed how long the new Shadow campaign will take to complete. He mentioned that it could be “about the same length” or maybe “a little less” than the main Sonic Generations storyline that is also included in the Sonic X Shadow Generations package. The general consensus is that the original Sonic Generations takes roughly six hours for those simply running through Sonic’s timeline-jumping adventure, though completionist runs could take upwards of 21 hours.

Sonic X Shadow Generations’ New Story Campaign is Almost As Long As the Original Game

Fans can expect even more Shadow-centric content after Sonic X Shadow Generations launches later this month, as those who purchase the game’s Digital Deluxe edition will receive a special bonus skin modeled after Shadow’s appearance in the upcoming Sonic the Hedgehog 3 movie on December 12. Keanu Reeves voices Shadow while using this new skin, which will also come with a bonus level inspired by the recent Sonic 3 trailer, though it won’t be connected to the movie itself.

Even without this Sonic the Hedgehog 3 tie-in DLC, it looks like players will have a lot to do in Sonic X Shadow Generations, as its new content will reportedly be as long as the original game. This could make Shadow Generations feel more like a brand-new standalone game rather than a pack-in for an existing one, and it won’t be long until players get to experience it for themselves. In the meantime, Sega has started releasing the Sonic X Shadow Generations: Dark Beginnings web series, a collection of animated shorts detailing Shadow’s tragic backstory in the build-up to Sonic X Shadow Generations.
